Problem is they were never ahead of Bama in the polls.

You're right, but if both LSU and BAMA had run the table that year, there could have been a bowl match-up. (Granted, LSU early on that year declared they did not want the Sugar Bowl.).

They would still lose to state. Nutt would let the team party hard the whole week and the get a hangover against state. Nutt was never going to win a title on both those 98 and 99 teams, they were loaded with depth everywhere but Nutt in his DNA would have won screw it up.

Now if Butch Davis was the coach then he would have won an SEC title on those teams.

I think it’s probably Georgia or Auburn.

Big time heartbreak on big time stages for both teams.

LSU and Florida have had some tough ones in the modern era, but they also both got multiple titles.

I'll say this as an LSU fan

2012 Natty vs Bama I was 23 years old and in the Dome that night. After the game I was so defeated. Felt like my world was crumbling around me. Just sick to my stomach but I never shed a tear and I never threw a temper tantrum.

2005 MNF vs Tennessee I was 16 years old and checked out of high school that day to tailgate and go to the game. Week after Katrina that place was rocking when we were up 21-0 early. It really did feel divine. The game slowly slipped away and we lost in OT. I remember walking out of that stadium with my head hung low and crying. Just filled with sadness.

Tennessee '05 always sticks out in my mind more so than the '12 Natty loss to Bama but they are for sure #1a and #1b

Steve Atwater dropped interception against Miami. Had he caught it, Arkansas wins.

Ump was squeezing the pitcher so most fans felt anger instead of pain.

Too many to name but I'm still not over that one and Atwater dropping the INT in the EZ vs Miami Thanksgiving week 88. I can picture it all.

1969 - Ole Miss - Tigers' only loss. Cost them opportunity to play Longhorns for NC in Cotton Bowl

Penn State was also undefeated, so the Cotton Bowl may not have decided the champ that year. Pollsters did some weird things back then.

I'm really surprised Arkansas fans have not mentioned the '66 Cotton Bowl game that they lost to LSU 14-7.

Arkansas was heavily favored over a three loss LSU team.

Losing that game cost Arkansas the NC.

I had wanted to forget that damn game, thanks a lot.

That 9th inning meltdown was one of the hardest things I ever witnessed. We had played for the natty in 2013 and lost, so many of our fans thought "This is it, FINALLY!" And then the heartbreak. One of the toughest losses for me personally.

There is no team in this league that has had this variety of kick-in-the-dick for such a sustained period of time. Upsets, close losses, losses that destroyed our program, losses that killed our climb back to relevancy. Even the worst programs in the SEC have had roller coaster rides in the last 20 years, while we've been in a mine cart, that occasionally runs out into the quarry but back into the mine. We got obliterated by a dogshit Missouri and Vanderbilt in back to back weeks in 2018. That was an even lower low than losing to Ga St and BYU the next year, and is probably the lowest I've been in regards to UT football to date.

The Arkansas starting QB left in the second quarter after suffering a shoulder injury. Arkansas had one of the better offenses in the nation that season. But they were unable to move the ball with the backup. It did cost Arkansas back to back titles but it wasn't even close to the tragic loss in the 1969 Texas game.

It sucked. Really bad. It was made worse by the fact in early 2017 the Falcons were completely dominating the best franchise in the NFL the last decade in the Super Bowl and in every way possible choked away a world championship.

Honorable mentions:

2012 SECC
1996 World Series
2002 loss to a bad Florida team. 13-1 missed out on NC game.
1991 World Series, screw you Kent Herbeck.
2012 NFC Championship collapse vs The 49rs.
The 1994 strike…Braves were best team in majors.
2021 Eastern Conference finals Trae Young’s ankle.
Jasper Sanks non fumble against Tech 1999
2008 College World series. Dominated all the favorites, won game one of championship series against Fresno, blew a 5 run lead game 2, game 3 was a forgone conclusion.

Definitely Arkansas since they're one of the few schools that actually cares about baseball. Then you throw in the Stoernover and that puts them over the top. And the end of that Sugar Bowl against Ohio St.
I got nauseous reading this.
