Everyone, including my fellow LSU brethren needs to read about Huey Long. Absolutely fascinating read. The guy was about to take down FDR before he got shot. Thank God he didn’t take down FDR.
He was a straight up fasicst but LOVED him some LSU. Turned it into his pet project after the Old Guard in NOLA repeatedly turned him away to build up Tulane.
He fancied himself a musician and was best buds with the LSU band director, co-wrote some of the fight songs we still use today, hired several football coaches himself and one coach quit bc Huey wouldn’t stop trying to take over the locker room and half time. Drew up plays for the football team (that were never used).
Sponsored a state funded trip to bring thousands of students to the Ole Miss game by train. I think he blackmailed one of the railroad execs to get it paid for gratis, lol!??
A whole whole lot of what goes on in Louisiana today is 100% attributable to this dude. To me, he’s the ethos of #JustDifferent.
It’s not all positive to be sure, but let’s just appreciate that we are yet another colorful feather in the SEC cap which makes it the best conference in Football. And definitely the most fun.

The last few governors stayed out of LSU politics. Some previous state leaders were even hostile toward the LSU campuses. Past governors as far back as the 1930s were heavy-handed toward LSU's growth. The current governor, however, is a bit too close to the school, and it is not a good look. Funny thing, the current Gov. Jeff Landry, is not an LSU graduate. He is an alum of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns who traditionally despise LSU and all it stands for.

To me its normal, Rumor has it Bobby Jindal keep Les Miles from being fired. Huey P Long got around funding issues for having Tiger stadium built, by having dorm rooms built into Tiger Stadium.
Its just now days being more out in the open how much the Governor is involved with LSU athletics.

RE the train incident, LSU had a big game out of state. When the railroad increased its prices, for a train load of students, Huey threatened to raise taxes on the railroad. The railroad took a knee & the students were able to ride at significantly reduced / free rates.

They were still open as dorms when I was in school (early 80's). Didn't live there but knew guys who did (it was a dump!). From what I understand everyone had to evacuate the building on game days and you were let back into the dorm until the game was over whether you went to the game or not.
