My favorite parts of those two seasons were taking massive dumps on LSU's face.
But I'm an Ole Miss fan, so ya know.
shite.

I like Bourbon and all, but I'd be a little upset if my job was paying me in whiskey daily. I know it's a rough economy, but I hope 14's employers are treating him a little better than that.

On the bright side if we beat yall, Les should be gone right? I mean I wasn't that pissed off when State beat us 3 years ago since that got rid of the Swamp Ape we had coaching us.

You could always hire Jack Crowe, he almost has SEC experience...

Slightly on-topic, from two years ago:
My pal Tim (LSU grad like me): Who's the chick?
xiv: My new girl. She went to Mississippi State.
Tim: You're dating a cow?
xiv: Well, she went to Ole Miss for a year.
Tim: So you're dating a preppy cow.
And the chick was right there.

That's only because the end result was totally worth the means.

Rivalries are different from other games in the following ways-
Geography - same state/neighboring state, fans in contact with each other regularly IRL
Constant hatred - the 2 teams hate each other no matter the record or implications of the game
Two sided - the hatred must be mutual
The game has a name - Iron Bowl, Egg Bowl, Cocktail Party
The game matters no matter what - even in both teams a 0-fer - both sides get up for the game
LSU fans may see Alabama as a rival, but the inverse is not true.
Is the LSU/Alabama a big game? Recently, yes but it has not been so historically.
Does it have geographic proximity? No - Alabama and LSU fans don't share the same space on a daily basis unless you happen to live in the other's state
Constant hatred? No - Alabama fans don't hate LSU on the whole
Two sided? No, historically LSU has been just another SEC game. The importance of the game has grown recently as LSU has become a power and Saban coming to Alabama.
Does it have a name? No
Does it matter no matter what? Not really - it only becomes important when their are championship implications. When Shula was our coach, no LSU fan saw Alabama as a rival.
In a nutshell, if the feelings behind the game wax and wane according to post-season implications, coaching changes, recruiting battles etc. then it is not a rivalry.
It isn't a knock on LSU. It doesn't mean that right now the game isn't an important game or a meaningful game. It just isn't a rivalry.

Exactly. The day of the loss itself sucked, but the days following weren't so bad.

Texas and Oklahoma have nothing on Auburn and Alabama. Its still in the top 3, but I feel that Ohio State/Michigan and Auburn/Alabama are both far more intense rivalry games.
You could be certainly be right. I'd be lying if I said I spent a lot of time around the Texas/OU game.

Geography - same state/neighboring state, fans in contact with each other regularly IRL
a) it isn't required. ND/USC and Michigan/Minnesota are two old-timey rivalries that didn't share borders.
b) it is increasingly unneeded in the age of faster travel. Florida/Tennessee enjoyed about 20 years of an incredibly bitter rivalry until recently.
Geography certainly helps, but it is far less required than it used to be.

quote:Don't take this the wrong way, BamaChick, but in the modern age, that's the kind of thing designed to get more chicks to watch the game (see Magnolia Bowl--no male LSU/OM fan on earth needs a name for that game).
The game has a name - Iron Bowl, Egg Bowl, Cocktail Party
quote:The home team is 7-22-1 in my lifetime in the LSU/Bama series. That always makes for a helluva road trip!
The game matters no matter what - even in both teams a 0-fer - both sides get up for the game
quote:I suspect--and forgive me if you perceive this as disrespectful--that you are lawyering your way around this particular part of the argument to prove your point. I've been to many LSU/Bama games. I know hate. I know it well. I have seen it, heard it, felt it, tasted it, and passed it through my digestive system plenty of times in those situations.
Constant hatred? No - Alabama fans don't hate LSU on the whole
quote:True. Auburn, Tennesee, and even Mississippi State are bigger rivals for Alabama than is LSU.
Two sided? No, historically LSU has been just another SEC game. The importance of the game has grown recently as LSU has become a power and Saban coming to Alabama.
quote:Completely false.

quote:Not taking it as a knock.
It isn't a knock on LSU. It doesn't mean that right now the game isn't an important game or a meaningful game.
quote:Disagree. Just because it isn't in the same spot on the list for both teams doesn't make it not a rivalry. I have some Bama in my family--it's a rivalry, all right.
It just isn't a rivalry.
Ask every Bama fan to list the top rivals, and LSU falls at #3 or #4 for 99% of Tide fans; Ask LSU fans the same question, and Bama is #1 or #2 for probably 75% of LSU fans.
Just because it isn't precise doesn't mean it isn't a rivalry.
Good post, good points (some of them, at least), but I see some holes in the argument.
But if we want to bust balls here, Bama isn't worthy of a rivalry with LSU since they cheat so much. They have 30 forfeits/vacates in 17 years.

It is played in the old cotton bowl.
Arkansas/aTm is played at Jerry's place.
Each has huge implications in the big12.

The Iron Bowl is in the top 3 rivalries in America.

Another telling factor (not a litmus test--just one of many factors) on how good a rivalry is: If there were an infinite number of seats in the stadium, how many people would pay for a ticket and show up?
In an average year, I'd say that the Egg Bowl would get 80,000; there are plenty of rivalries in the SEC that would get well over 150,000.
