Tulane was the original University of Louisiana and technically still own the rights to that name.
quote:
The school was founded as a public medical college in 1834, and became a comprehensive university in 1847. The institution was privatized under the endowments of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb in 1884.
quote:
After reopening, it went through a period of financial challenges because of an extended agricultural depression in the South which affected the nation's economy. Paul Tulane, owner of a prospering dry goods and clothing business, donated extensive real estate within New Orleans for the support of education. This donation led to the establishment of a Tulane Educational Fund (TEF), whose board of administrators sought to support the University of Louisiana instead of establishing a new university. In response, through the influence of former confederate general Randall Lee Gibson, the Louisiana state legislature transferred control of the University of Louisiana to the administrators of the TEF in 1884.[1] This act created the Tulane University of Louisiana.[22] The university was privatized, and is one of only a few American universities to be converted from a state public institution to a private one.[23]
So Louisiana is too poor to afford a flagship university. They had to privatize.

I've always thought it strange there is no university of Louisiana. If I'm not mistaken I believe it's the only state that doesn't have a flagship namesake but only a state university.

Under the federal Morrill Act of 1862 each state was to designate it’s Land Grant college to receive funding for agriculture education. SEC states obviously didn’t do so until after the Civil War. All Land Grant colleges/universities carry the official “Agricultural and Mechanical College” as part of their names even if it is not stated or printed. Current A&M colleges include LSU A&M, Texas A&M, Auburn A&M, Clemson A&M, U.of Arkansas A&M, Miss. St. U. A&M, U. of Tennessee A&M, U. of Florida A&M, U. of Missouri A&M, and U. of Georgia A&M. Among the other A&M colleges are Purdue, Rutgers and Cornell.

La-Lafayette is a directional school who is trying to take a flagship name, but the sad fact is, Louisiana is so poor that they don't have a flagship "University of," just an Ag school.
This is actually a refreshing new take. I really mean that.
It's a tired old non-story, but a refreshing take nonetheless.

What is the university of Louisiana?
With most states the U of _________ is the flagship and the _________ State a secondary school. We only want flagships in the SEC so LSU and Miss St have to go!
What does that make Auburn University?

wut is the obsession with 'ag schools'. All land grant universities have a ton of majors outside of the agricultural department.
Calling a university a 'flagship' university doesn't mean anything.

That's the team that has only scored 1 touchdown vs LSU in 22 games. They've also only scored 27 points combined in those 22 games against LSU. That's who that is. USL.

No obsession at all....and you are exactly right.....many Land Grand universities include Medical School, Law School, Liberal Arts....and a a bunch of others..... and Land Grant and “flagship” are not the same unless so designated by the state.....
Trivia....a requirement of Land Grant colleges was that military science courses be compulsory for male students for 100 years.... thus ROTC was in my curriculum for two years....and there was a war on.....and the first ever draft lottery....and I drew a low number.....and 2nd Lieutenants got paid more than PFCs....put me down for Jr. and Sr yrs and a commission.

Institute or SLI, University of Southwestern La or USL, and now ULLLLLL. Mascots have changed over time as well, from the Bulldogs to the Chili Peppers to the Ragin Cajuns. Skip quit playing them in both baseball & softball for a number of yrs due to their violent ...several fights at games in both sports...hate for LSU. In football, they have never sold all their ticket allotment for games in T.Stadium. Tried to support them, along with LSU, when living in Lafayette but not possible. They are like tulane, not relevant to LSU.
Speaking of name changes:
Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy (1853)
Louisiana State University (1870)
Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College (1874)
And the reason the series was halted for several years in baseball and softball was because LSU was tired of getting beat. They are the ones that instigated the fights due to frustration. Skip was a great coach. I honestly believe that the reason the state of Louisiana has such great college baseball is due to Skip. It was not Skip that halted playing the Cajuns, but the pressure he received from the LSU board. As for football, you may be correct. I have nothing to agree or disagree with. I only know the new AD seems to be making major changes that, on paper, seem to be the most aggressive changes made in the last 60 years.
Oh, and though LSU might not recognize the university in Lafayette, LA as the University of Louisiana, or Louisiana, it seems all other SEC schools do. Check out their home sites and see them scheduling "Louisiana". Check out Florida's, Mississippi States, Georgia's 2016 schedule, Ole Miss's.....

Auburn A&M
No such place exists or ever existed (there is an AUM, Auburn University Montgomery which is an offshoot of AU)...
Auburn's origins:
East Alabama Male College (1856-1872)
Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (1872-1899) 1892 became first co-ed college in state
Alabama Polytechnic Institute (1899-1960)
Auburn University (1960-Present)
There is an Alabama A&M located in Huntsville, AL. However, it did not take that name until 1969. Was originally called State Normal and Industrial School of Huntsville (1875) and then named State Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes (1896) and then State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute for Negroes (1919).

Except that until 20 years ago or whatever it was USL, Southwestern LA. They rebranded to non-directional to amp up the sports
I liked it when they were the Bull Dogs...solid Rugby teams in the 80's and early 90's...solid town, good place to go to school.

Louisiana State is just a liberal state college.
you appear to be one of many that don't have a clue what liberal means. or you have allowed others to define it for you. LSU is one of the most conservative university's in the country and always has been.

Clemson was originally Clemson Agricultural College and now it has been officially Clemson University since 1965. No A&M is in it.
