C'mon, this isn't that hard!
It's the same as everywhere else: there's the University of Arkansas, and then there's Arkansas State. There's the University of Tennessee, and then there's Tennessee State. There's the University of Alabama, and then there's Alabama State.
Same thing: there's the University of Louisiana, and then there's Louisiana State.

With most states the U of _________ is the flagship and the _________ State a secondary school. We only want flagships in the SEC so LSU and Miss St have to go!

Except that until 20 years ago or whatever it was USL, Southwestern LA. They rebranded to non-directional to amp up the sports. They've had decent baseball squads here and there, and football has competed. I honestly don't know about basketball.

Flagship university of the state of Louisiana?
Louisiana State is just a liberal state college.

USL thought they should be considered LSU's equal, so they pitched a bitch to get their name changed. The legislature threw them a bit of curve by allowing any school in the University of Louisiana System to change its name to "University of Louisiana at ..." Northeastern changed to UL Monroe, but the others didn't. ULL is still in the same system as ULM, Northwestern, McNeese. Southeastern and Nichols. They just think they're better and ESPN is stupid enough to kowtow to them and give them the recognition they so desperately crave.

La-Lafayette is a directional school who is trying to take a flagship name, but the sad fact is, Louisiana is so poor that they don't have a flagship "University of," just an Ag school.
LSU's actual name is Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mineralogical College. It's Louisiana State A&M.

The Nut Butter's in Lafayette Louisiana that are fans of the "University of Louisiana at Lafayette" seem to think, for some unknown reason, that their little college is somehow worthy of being called the "University of Louisiana."
Nobody gets it, outside of their little UL-L clique.
We all laugh at them. (Including fans of the University of Louisiana at Monroe)
They're very badly suffering from "Little Brother Syndrome" and feel that self-anointing themselves with that school name will make it so.
Anybody ever been to a "University of Louisiana at LAFAYETTE" home football game? There's about 5,000 people in the stadium and it's more like a Junior College game than major college football. That's why many of us refer to UL-L as "Southwest Louisiana Junior College @ Louisville." (The Louisville thing there comes from calling themselves UL)
BTW, Tulane University in New Orleans was actually called the "University of Louisiana" when the school was first founded.

Another college you could never get in.

A university system that includes ULL, ULM, La Tech, and others

a lot of LSU hate on a school that is just trying to improve its branding.

That's the team that has only scored 1 touchdown vs LSU in 22 games. They've also only scored 27 points combined in those 22 games against LSU. That's who that is. USL.

Tulane was the original University of Louisiana and technically still own the rights to that name.
When the legislature allowed the universities in the Louisiana system to change their names to “University of Louisiana”, it contained a provision that none of those colleges could do so without including the city where they were located, to prevent any from trying to claim flagship status.
University of Louisiana Lafayette has tried to use University of Louisiana as its nickname for athletics. I don’t understand why ESPN or the legislature lets them. I guess it’s because they really don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. They’re just another mid tier sunbelt team.
