What is it about Nick Saban that makes him such an extraordinary Head Coach?

(Bare with me here. I'm somewhat new to keeping up w/ SEC Football & Saban)
As far as I know, he does not call any plays on offense or defense...
If you say it's his ability to recruit, you have to remember how unsuccessful Ed Orgeron was & what an outstanding recruiter he was.
Is he known to be a great motivator? Gets in the kids faces & pumps them up / good pregame & halftime speech giver / etc. or does he just have a knack for hiring the right assistant coaches to do all the work?
Whatever it is, he's the best in the business & he's had numerous National Championships at Alabama & also tied Southern Cal or whatever it was for a BCS National Championship while he was at Louisiana State.

If he's like the one coach I had who was one of the top in his sport... it has to be being an overbearing a-hole. He also used to have a huge recruiting advantage before he moved to college. Generally an unlikeable prick, but damn he coached a lot of Olympians and American record holders. Not much taller than Saban and equally mediocre in his competing days 
just my 2¢.
Edit: coached us to 30% of our 2012 olympic medals, but what do I know about elite coaches.

He didn't tie Southern Cal for the BCS national championship in 03. LSU won the BCS national championship over Oklahoma.

Process baw.
All jokes aside, its the process. Everything Saban does is about making every person associated with the program perform to the maximum of their abilities. From the starting quarterback to the janitorial staff. If you work or play for the program, he demands excellence.
The belief is when you structure a program around "the process," everything else will take care of itself.

He's an expert recruiter. He routinely has 5-stars warming the bench.
Great coach, don't get me wrong, but he's a better recruiter.

He demands nothing but excellence from his players and most importantly, his staff. I think he's a workaholic and doesn't accept mediocrity.

Saban was smart enough to understand who the power brokers throughout the state are, how the machine works, and how to communicate with the REC while keeping a plausible deniability distance from them while he works that relationship with Emmert at the NCAA, and getting the administration to fall in line at home. That coupled with the fact that he is highly organized and motivated and you get the dynasty he has built today.

I'm not one of those Saban haters. The people that are have jealousy in my opinion. Saban has one of the best defensive minds ever in the game. He also does a great job evaluating talent.
The first thing people love to say is it's his recruiting classes but I've seen enough programs get top 10 classes that do far less with those classes. Saban is smart and yes can motivate but he runs his program like a smart business man.

His defense is complex. Lots of checks and handoffs depending on formations, etc.
Spread makes him have to simplify, but not just any spread. A spread with Cam, JFF, Tebow, Nick Marshall, etc works best bc the QB has to be accounted for running and passing.
In general though, CNS is a great coach when he has top talent. There are no miracles out on the football field. It's the Jimmies and the Joes, not the X's and the O's most of the time.

The media basically anointed Saban before he had a chance to unpack his office and made him out to be more than he was at that point. Keep in mind that time was in the height of ESPN's influence. That allowed him to come in and immediately recruit at a high level.
Take all that and mix in perfect timing of his first full recruiting class, 2008, being an insanely loaded in-state class allowed him his first #1 overall class and the cornerstones to his first 3 titles.
The aforementioned discipline and business-like approach make him one of the only coaches suited to maintain all that talent. Most coaches it would crumble under its own weight.
All those things together make a big ball and once it got started rolling it wasn't stopping
