The 2001 season really was the turning point. Saban's second year at LSU. Tennessee put the dagger in UF at the end of the year (because of 9/11) making Spurrier's arse quit. Then LSU beating Tenn in the SECCG holding them out of the MNC. (Tenn hasn't been the same since) which gave LSU the 2001 SECC and momentum to a MNC in '03.

Combo of all of the above , but mainly superior coaching.

It will shift back soon enough, lets enjoy the ride.

The correct answer is Albert Means, if not for him probably wouldn't have been much of a shift to begin with.

Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are the true south.

Georgia and Tennessee are too. Tennessee just sucks.

Georgia is good tho. Should petition to be in the West.

SABAN. Period...end of discussion. First at LSU and then Alabama. In turn, widened the gap between those two teams and the rest of the west forcing AD's to step up and upgrade coaches and facilities.

Honestly, great theory.

Chavis is the DC of HUNH's bane.

But the truth is.......

Tuberville. Alabama losing to him so many times put Alabama in desperation mode so we sent the kitchen sink to Miami and got Saban....after beating Tubs 36-0, it led Auburn to start stepping up their game while LSU was doing the same. Arkansas' failures under Nutt led them to hire Petrino which made them a Top 5 team for a bit. Same with Ole Miss and State. After Nutt and Croom, they hired GOOD, but not great coordinators to keep their programs stable and ultimately provide great lower depth for the division.

Then A&M came in and sort of fricked shite up...even though they only got 3rd in the west at best.

Ask any Vol fan and they will tell you this. It was a watershed game in the shifting of the balance of power from East to West.

I agree with most everything so far. I also wonder if some of the elite talent that would normally go to East schools is now being sequestered by FSU and Clemson. Probably not a huge factor but one or two elite players can make a huge difference. Taj Boyd, for example, wanted to go to UT.

Nick Saban has made the biggest impact on the SECW.

He brought LSU back to the top and then after he left and LSU stayed up there he goes to Bama and resurrects them as well.

Auburn has been the same pretty much, way up sometimes, way down others. Arkansas never makes much of an impact nor the Misssissippi schools. The biggest change has been with LSU and Bama.

What hasn't been mentioned is that it was the west teams that A) went whole hog into over signing B) will let anyone into their schools C) have booster programs on a whole other level. The coaching is a part of it as well, but the first three mean that recruiting can change things around quickly.

It truly is the wild west these days.

Florida being down. Its that simple, Florida is the dominant program in the East and the only SEC program that when its good is equal to the dominant power in the West in Bama.

Florida basically counterbalances Bama and LSU (1 less SEC title than those two combined since we shifted to title games)

Florida- LSU+Bama
Uga- Auburn
USCe-Ole Miss
Mizzou-TAMU

MSU- KY or Vandy or UT (one of the two has consistently been decent but not great)
Arky- KY or Vandy or UT (the one that's bad)

With Florida down the divisions are unbalanced, once Florida gets a good HC the balance of power will shift again, though it will likely still favor the West once Spurrier retires as USC will fall off a bit and UT is never going to become a national power again, they're like Nebraska-lots of history, great fans but no natural recruiting base and once the pipelines were shutdown they aren't re-opening.

This is actually pretty huge too-- Florida and Georgia for power schools actually have decent admissions (not like Vandy or Stanford but more in line with say a non-OSU Big 10 program).

Eh. It's "the wild west these days" only in the sense that the 1950s were the era of Wild West television shows. It just doesn't compare to the olden days of cheating and lack of institutional control. There's simply too much oversight and too many ways to get information out there.
