Year three and 4 he had them in SECe hunt, recruiting was good, etc.

it all went to shite so fast for that man.

what happened that derailed that train?

He had them 6-0 and in playoff hunt in 2016.

by year 3, they almost beat OU, and frankly, should have.

He, more than dooley or pruitt, had something going there for a few years.

They never got a QB.

Josh Dobbs had us on a good track. 15 and 16 were in spite of Butch Jones, if Jeremy fricking Pruitt was in charge in 15 we win at least 10, that was a playoff caliber team.

From an outsider looking in - they could never get out of their own way.

They were really good at mopping up the lower end of the SECe at the time toward the end of the season, which amounted for a good 9-4 tally after beating up on some poor Big 10 team in the bowl game.

But when it was a big game, they just couldn't get it done enough. Needed an all-timer comeback against Florida in 2016, and that was the only time they beat them. Turned it over 7 times when they lost a 2OT game against A&M. Huge meltdown against OU at home.

At the end of the day, when you're that inconsistent and your players keep tripping over their own shoe laces 3-4 years into the coaching regime, it's a coaching problem more than anything else.

Butch was their Tom Herman: recruited at an elite level, but buckled too often when the chips were down on Saturdays

That 2015 Tennessee team was really good.

Every team depends on QB play. He fell off after Dobbs.

First 8 loss season in the 126 years of Tennessee football probably didn't help. In 2017, he didn't have Josh Dobbs to bail him out.

Nick Saban broke him, then rebuilt him.

He only got to 5-0, but the breaking point still occurred.

Butch eroded a lot of goodwill with his "champions of life" comments.

Just a lack of awareness and messaging that combined with coming up short on the field eventually did him in

I went to the UT/Bama game that year thinking it would be a good game. Most UT fans were gone by halftime, and we left mid 3rd quarter.

And they probably should have lost to UGA that year too if not for the freaking celebration penalty

Put it like this. In 2016, we had Hurd, Kamara, and Kelly in the backfield. Malone, Johnson, a 5 star in Preston Williams at WR. Josh Dobbs. Jalen Reeves Maybin, Derek Barnett, Cam Sutton.

And we lost to a terrible South Carolina squad and got demolished by an even worse Vandy squad. In a vacuum, 2015 can maybe be excused. In a vacuum 2016 was unacceptable by any standard whatsoever. Even the Florida team we beat was one of the weakest Florida teams in that period of awful Florida teams. That defense was arse and they could not run the ball worth a damn. That was probably the weakest team to make the SECCG since Miss St in 1998, but I'm pretty sure their defense was at least good. It goes to show how rotten the culture had gotten at UGA that they didn't dominate the East right off the bat, even though they came close to beating us.

If not for Josh Dobbs, Butch doesn't make it to 2015.

Dobbs held that together. When he left, Butch’s catch phrases couldn’t keep it going.

Recruiting wasn’t that good. The numbers were pumped by legacy kids but too much drama caused guys to leave. Without the legacy skill guys he wasn’t a decent recruiter. Add in he sucked at recruiting the trenches it was fools gold.
