Edit 11/21/23: Look like our AD wants a sitting head coach instead.

So you're going to hire a 34 year old first time head coach who has been a co-defensive coordinator for 5 years?

What could go wrong?

They could do worse. At least Schumann would be cheap.

Did you not read the entire post? He is the son of a head coach. That's the key.

I guess Jimbos gangsta son has an important part of the resume.

Train him up for Alabama. Takes over for Saban.

Worst case scenario, he bombs out.

Best case scenario, he's great and goes to Alabama when Saban retires in a couple of years.

It's a lose-lose.

Elko is probably the best option for them.

And then he'll leave for Bama when Saban retires.

Jimbo was one of the most credentialed and "sure things" in college football. It still ultimately failed.

The young first-time HC seems to be working out okay in the NFL with a handful of jobs.
-Sean McVay
-Kyle Shanahan
-Mike McDaniel
-DeMeco Ryan
-Kevin O’Connell
-Zac Taylor

Usually, someone this age hasn't been given the opportunity at a big-time school. Usually, they cut their teeth at G5s and below. Even then that doesn't guarantee any success at a higher level.

All he knows is what Saban & Kirby do. That's about as good of a pedigree as anyone can get.

Then why would you not offer Dan Lanning?

If Bama is coming for him then it means he's winning big and kicking Bama's arse. I'll take it then fight them for him after some hardware.

Would he leave? Maybe we like Schumann better? Maybe we think they're comparable and one costs 70 M less?

Lanning was a 35 year old co-defensive coordinator with only 3 years DC experience when Oregon hired him.

Seems to have worked out ok.

Some guys are ready to be head coaches, some aren't. That's what ADs get paid the big bucks to make the hard choice about. Lanning was clearly ready in hindsight. Is Schumann? No clue.

Not necessarily.

If you hire him then he goes 8-4 next year and 10-3 the year following, Bama is absolutely coming after him.

You need someone to improve A&M, they just need someone to not crash the car.

Schumann is the better DC.
Schumann is the better position coach.
Schumann is better in the week leading up to and at half time of the game.

But you aren't hiring a DC.
Schumann doesn't like interviews.
Schumann isn't energetic and passionate like Lanning/Kirby.

You are taking the gamble that your CEO doesn't need to worry much about being a CEO and can focus on football.

I just dont see Bama handing the keys over to a 35-year-old without any major accolades. I think they'd be more willing to get Lanning & Norvell assuming they keep winning.

It may work, it may not
Smart put in a lot of time before landing with UGA

For a first time head coach, these big time programs can eat you up quick
It could be another Muschamp so it's a risk but it also may payoff
