Was Devonta Smith the worst thing to happen to Shaun Wade?

I checked today where he went in the draft and I was shocked to see him go in the fifth round. He was projected in the top ten in some mocks earlier last year. Jeez should have opted out. Do you think Devonta Smith abusing him hurt his stock that bad?

Not remaining an opt out was a terrible decision it seems.

He was never that good to begin with. The more he played, the more he got exposed. Devonta was just the cherry on top.

Nah, dude was proving to be overrated for a couple weeks and then Smith just stamped it.

Devonta Smith burned everyone who covered him last year. The dude was always 3-5 yards behind the defense.

I've seen a lot of receivers dominate in different ways. But Smith always seemed to make his bread running down the sideline.

I think Indiana running past him every other play was probably more detrimental

Devonta Smith made a lot of really good players look bad including yalls boy Stingley Jr. I think the toughness of Smitty is under appreciated. It is rare for a junkyard dog to be that silky smooth.

He was having a bad season before the national title game. He’s either exclusively a slot corner in the NFL or he moves to safety in a system that is looking for a ball hawk. He seems a bit stiff when playing tight coverage and tends to lose steps due to his WR having crisper movements in their cuts and such. He actually tackles pretty well for a corner. He seems to prefer playing zone to man responsibilities. He wants to be able to play the ball when on the outside you almost always gotta play the receiver first and foremost.

Minkah Fitzpatrick is about 10lbs bigger but I kinda had the same feelings about him while at Alabama. He was only alright as an outside corner in 2016 after being a nickel corner in 2015. He moved to safety due to injuries at some point and he really flourished.

I think the Phins wanted him to be a corner/nickel player for some reason I could never figure out and it is no surprise that he flourished when traded to the Steelers and put back at safety.

Gotta wonder if Wade could do the same thing?

It was more than that.

He had a bad year overall and just can't hang on the outside.

He was bad all year long.

Some people just never turn a game on if it’s not SEC related...

As a Ravens fan I was perplexed by this as well. Most of the commentary about him post draft was that he was much more well regarded as a Nickel than a true outside CB. With Humphrey and Peters on the outside, Nickel is all he'll see for a while anyway.

Nah, I think being put at boundary corner when he has the skill set of a nickel corner or free safety probably hurt his draft stock a lot more than being the last in a long line of college DBs to get roasted by Devonta Smith.

Ravens usually pretty adept at eying fit and I think you're right. I don't know how long their outside corner situation will hold together but immediately Hump-Peters-Wade is a very solid nickel alignment.

He was having a rough season before the Alabama game. It seemed like he quit and then decided to play again but his head wasn't fully in it.

Yeah no different than us taking CB Brandon Stephens in the 3rd to play FS.

He took Najee on in the open field and solo tackled him pretty well. That didn't happen to Najee a lot.

So this is a good point and a good analysis. Safety might be his best bet.

Truth. Shaun was exposed by many other receivers.

Kind of like what the Barn was doing to Eddie Jackson in 2014 when he was a CB. Eddie now an All Pro Safety in the NFL.

There is a #24 at Baton Rouge that was embarrassed by #6 last year yet he is projected a 1st rounder in one of these 2022 NFL mock deals.
