I didn't realize Vanderbilt was such a powerhouse in the early days.

Holy chit! Did you see Florida bringing up the rear of the SEC until Spurrier started at QB in the mid-60's?

The reason UT hired Bob Neyland was to beat Vanderbilt.

The fact that we have an 80k seat stadium and not one the size of a MSU or UK is a fricking miracle.

I was trying to figure out how Tennessee briefly passed us around 2008, then realized that must be the vacated wins

The early powers of college football were the "smart" schools and military academies.

After WW2, when colleges figured out they could make money with football, that changed.

I didn't realize UK had so many wins before 1930.

LSU apparently started football way before the 2000s

It is a surprise to see Arkansas finish so far ahead of Ole Miss. The two schools have been linked by similar fortunes over the years. Granted a lot of that was having to forfeit 33 wins by Ole Miss.

Vandy led until the 60s, then dropped like a rock.

Yep, and it was short lived.

In fact Tennessee has only led the series once, for one year, 1960

That’s in part because Florida was the last SEC team to form a team.

This is based on wins, not win %.

Anyway, I think Florida was still third to last on there at the time Spurrier took over as coach. Forget about QB.

All the private, heavily academic schools were originally the best athletically. It's why the Ivy league schools dominated the first few decades of collegiate sports.

They were the only schools who could afford facilities and coaches and typically rich kids did athletics, poor kids had to work and shite. This was still in an era where a very small % of kids actually went to college.
