It’s because their decline started once black guys were allowed to play. Which is kind of a big deal.

Also check Tennessee since 1970.

Not as bad as Mississippi, but clearly, their best days are past them.

They still had 5 SEC titles (they can thank us for 85 and 90 though) up through the 90s.

Lack of black guys in Mississippi? Am missing something?

Remember when Georgia lost 3 SECCGs in a row? And that time they won the national championship before most people who use this site were born?

edit - sorry forgot about 2017 against the the poo hawks

Well done, between 1947 and 1970 Ole Miss won the most SEC titles with 6 and had an SEC record of 106-39-10 I think, by far the best over that 23 year period. LSU won 3 titles, TENN I think 3 and Bama 4 over that period.

Ole Miss' success was very short-lived in the grand scheme of things. It really spanned just a 17-year period from 1947-1963.

In the decade of the 1930s, Ole Miss was 8th in the SEC in Conference Win %.

In the decade of the 1940s, Ole Miss was 7th in the SEC in Conference Win%.

In the decades of the 1950's and 1960's, they were 2nd each time, trailing Georgia Tech in the '50s and Alabama in the '60s.

By the 1970s, the wheels had fallen back off the program, and they trailed the "Big 6" in conference winning percentage for 7th place in the league. The 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s have only gotten worse.

Being in the top group for 17 seasons out of 87 total doesn't make Ole Miss "Big 6" material.

That's the whole point, NO ONE seems to know what a powerhouse they were for an extended period of time.

17 seasons is not all that "extended," relatively speaking.

Again, in the 1940s, Ole Miss was 7th in the SEC in Winning Percentage. They finished the decade strong, beginning with the 1947 season, but the first 7 years of the decade were abysmal.

The 1950s were solid for them. They were only really elite in the 1960s up through 1963. After that they fell back off a bit.

"Big 6" is a status that is not easily obtained or lost. I mean heck, South Carolina was in the top group of the SEC from 2010-2013, but four seasons isn't going to get you anywhere when you're talking about 87 years of SEC history..... and 17 seasons for Ole Miss from 1947-1963 is also not enough. Not especially when you were a conference doormat before and since that small blip of time.

I mean from a time perspective, Florida has the weakest resume of the "Big 6". They didn't win their first SEC Title until the 1990s. Everyone likes to think they never started playing football until Spurrier came in 1990....

But look at SEC Win % in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. During the THREE DECADES that proceeded the true rise of Florida football, here was SEC Win % of the current members:

.805- Alabama
.662- Georgia
.609- Auburn
.578- Tennessee
.567- LSU
.528- Florida
.505- Ole Miss
.308- Kentucky
.269- Miss St.
.154- Vanderbilt

Florida was in the Top 6 for the THREE DECADES prior to the 1990s, ahead of Ole Miss BTW. And since 1990, Florida has had the top Win%.

Florida is not "Big 6" because of the last 30 seasons. That most recent 30 solidified their status, but they are what they are because of the last 60+ seasons.

When Ole Miss can put together six decades of strong football, they can join the group. But 1.7 decades doesn't cut it.

Interesting that Tennessee and LSU have played the fewest number of games against the Big 6 out of the group, yet also have the weakest winning percentage against the Big 6.

It all goes back to the days of the 10 team conference...when UT played Ole Miss, Vandy, Kentucky and Alabama every year and rotated the rest of the teams. So...the one big-6 team that Tennessee played the most for the first 60 years of the conference was Alabama.

Of the Big-6 teams...here is who Bama has played the most (since the formation of the SEC).

Tennessee - 86
Auburn - 72
LSU - 68
Georgia - 44
Florida - 32

So, if the majority of your Big-6 history was focused on playing the best of the Big-6 programs, it would skew your results as well. Georgia had the advantage of playing Florida every year before 1990 (when Florida football was invented).

Yeah, 'cause everybody knows Mississippi is a powerhouse.

I think it is looking at the historical context of the SEC. When people look at the records of "Big 6" vs Big 6, that does not take into account records of SEC teams in the earlier part of the SEC history. LSU has always played Ole Miss and when Vaught was coach, they for the period 1947 to 1963 were the dominant team, with 6 SEC titles. Hell Tulane between 1935 and 1949 won 3 SEC titles.

LSU and UGA have only played like 32 times.

The Big 6 as it is known today was when the SEC expanded to 12 teams. BAMA-TENN, UGA-AUB and LSU-UF were matched as permanent cross division rivals do to historical success and potential for future success, etc.

So, in other words you admit that you just sit at a keyboard and slap at the keys and hope something intelligent comes out?

Btw, the "poohawks" beat LSU that year. And, they have finished higher than LSU 4 times in the last 7 years.
