There’s some scuttlebutt today Mays will be sliding back inside and Wright will be at RT. I think Carvin will be rotated in often though so I’m not sure who starts will really matter

I was wondering. Without knowing all the ins and outs of how they look in practice, I felt like Wright at tackle and Mays at guard would be the strongest combination.

But, the coaches see them practice every day, and Pruitt does a really good job of identifying talent so I'd trust him.

Old Man Brain Fart moment...I was looking at something else when I typed that. Should be 0 UT; 18 UGA. I will update. Thanks.

VOLS defense should be a much tougher test than what Auburn and Hawgs provided imho

I agree. I am looking forward to it.

Obviously Pickens is a hoss but Thompson/Taylor is the best duo of corners VOLS have had in quite some time imo.
For me, the QB matchup is more intriguing. JG against the UGA secondary and Bennett against the UT secondary. Guarantano (SP?) can throw the ball, no doubt but seems more erratic with his accuracy on the deep ball.

Hey. You guys know him better than me, no doubt. This is just what seems to be the truth to me.

I felt Tennessee was set to take a big step forward this year, so I am just hoping that step doesn't start with us.

What are your thoughts on Mays at right tackle?

Has Morris looked same/better/worse this season?

Who else wasnt on your offensive line when you played us in 2019?

Tennessee has 3 WRs with receptions of 30 plus yards and all 8 pass catchers have a long of over 10. Hyatt and Jones are a couple of new faces seeing a lot of playing time. And So Eric Grey is becoming a great asset in the passing game. The UGA DBs will be tested but helped by Gitmos tendency to over/under throw or throw behind guys.

Tennessee’s running attack is mainly Chandler 5.5 YPC and Grey 5.2YPC with True Freshman Small (6’ 200 ) being the 3rd man in.

This will be the 1st time this year were all of the 1s have played or practiced together. The first 2 games of the year the DBs were playing new roles or out of their natural position. That Mizzou game the Vols were as basic and vanilla and new has I’ve seen them in years. I suspect that the Vols will be in a base 5-2 fronts or even 5-1 fronts with ToToToo as the sole LB.

For one... Jordan Davis has been the starting nose tackle since midway through 2018. The type of offense has dictated whether we wanted to stuff the run or pass in the first series. The same goes for the other personnel. Looking at games played may be more relevant.

Secondly, we rotate 3 deep on the DL. I know that sounds contrived and overused (as many new defenders come in when games are out of reach). But we want fresh bodies in the second half.

You are going to see a ton of Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Travon Walker, Malik Herring, Devonte Wyatt, Julian Rochester, and Warren Brinson.

I will be impressed if Tennessees front 5 look stronger late in the game.

With that many players seeing action throughout the important phases of the game, counting starts will make you look foolish Saturday evening.

I'm glad I am not the only one who struggles with his name. And the QB, too. You guys have a rule that they can't be on the team with a name like Smith or Jones?

It’s not his natural spot as he will likely play G in the NFL. But he can handle it. Vols Oline vs UGAs Dline is an advantage to the Vols with the ones. UGA going 3 deep and rotating guys in gives them an advantage.

. Honestly they haven’t been tested much so it’s hard to say. He has been consistent but against Mizzou and SC who knows.

Who else wasnt on your offensive line when you played us in 2019? Morris adding a year and Carvin dropped about 15 pounds to improve his quickness. Calbert is a completely different guy off the bench adding 35 pounds of bulk in the offseason (was playing at 285) and overall it’s just a different vibe/confidence. They are comfortable at 7 deep this year instead of trying to find 5.

Henry T is a force at MLB. I think he made a mistake dropping weight but I’m used to seeing 240 guys in run stopping roles. He is a more complete back and can cover a bit but 225 pound RBs will run over him now. He is listed at 235 but looks closer to 220.

I refuse to call Gitmo anything other than Gitmo. And it’s now a thing on the 4 boards I post on.

Trey Smith had missed the last half of the season in 2018 with blood clots in his lungs, and wasn't cleared for contact until right before the season opener...so his conditioning was limited due to the nature of his condition. He was still week-to-week by the time they played Georgia.

Wright and Morris were two True Freshmen starting at the Tackle Positions. So, they were there...but were getting their 2nd SEC start.

ETA...Jerome Carvin (currently starting RG) did not play against Georgia last year.

Is UGA's DL more experienced than UT's OL?

IMO, using avg. starts as a metric is entirely misleading, especially considering our 2 deep DL is about equivalent in meaningful snaps since 2018.

Throwing out the garbage time game snaps and Middle linebackers (they cover as much as they are down in our system), here's how would evaluate our DL experience of meaningful games played:

Davis: 21 (missed 6 games last year to injury)
Herring: 43
Smith: 16
Ojulari: 16
Anderson: 30
Walker: 14
Rochester: 33 (missed most of last year w/ injury)
Grant: 31 - but i don't think he's played a snap this year. Any dawg fans know if he's hurt or serving some type of quiet suspension?

And they play sound gap assignment football.

Even with UT's OL starting experience, they are still shuffling the deck and working on continuity. As such, I'd argue that, yes, our DL is more experienced than your Oline.

And that will likely be the difference in the game. The Vols can comfortably go with 7 guys on the Oline and that’s plenty for most games but UGA and Bama can routinely sub in decent depth to overcome the Vols Oline.

Yes with the 1s. The advantage UGA has is the ability to sub in fresh legs the whole game. By the 4th quarter Tennessee’s guys will have played most downs (they will sub some) while UGAs 1s should be fresh.

I really think you should ask someone explain depth to you Roy.

That is a hard metric to measure...since I haven't seen "meaningful games" tracked anywhere...but I can get overall games played in, rather than starts for UT's 8 OL who should see playing time:

Morris - 15
Johnson - 19
Smith - 39
Locklear - 23
Kennedy - 26 (16 at UT; 10 at Bama)
Carvin - 26
Mays - 28 @ UGA
Wright - 13

You seem to be downplaying the quality of our 1’s or overplaying the quality of your 1’s. That’s what I would expect a vol homer to do, especially one with an irrational hate for uga things.

Turnovers- Vols haven’t given up a TO yet and are 4-5 on 4th down conversion. Aggressive play in short yardage seems to be a thing this year for Pruitt.

Ok, you convinced me. Our Oline is garbage and UGAs 1s on the Dline are like playing a video game in God mode.

You win. Now go celebrate your victory and let the rest of us talk football Roy.
