Well obviously he is remembered fondly.

However seeing how the QB position is viewed most notably for passing ability Buck would suffer greatly in this regard. He would have trouble cracking the top 10, honestly.

Fromm, Murray, Stafford, Shockley, Greene, Zeier, Tarkenton, Rauch were better in that regard. And Goff was a better runner. Some of our recent placeholder QBs were better passers as well.

Bonus points to Buck for completing the single most important pass in UGA history, but ol Buck would be hard pressed to play D3 these days.

I remember him from the UGA rhyme when they thought they would repeat in 1981.

Herschel on the ground
Belue in the air
Butler's toe
And we'll get there.

Georgia fans are really bad at poetry, btw.

That guy that aged backwards? That was pretty cool.

Top 5? . frick no.

Hand off to Hershel left. Hand off to Hershel right.

Occasionally complete a pass to a reciever that doesn't have anyone within 10 yards of him because half the defense is keying on Hershel.

Nothing against Belue but basically all he had to do was not drop the ball before he handed it to Walker

No one pitched the toss sweep to Herschel better.

He’s remembered as the guy who handed the ball to HW. He’s a fan favorite but he’s not close to the top five qbs talent wise.

Not even close.

John Rauch
Fran Tarkenton
Ray Goff
Aaron Murray
Eric Zeier
David Greene
Matt Stafford

Are all ahead of him (arguably Jake Fromm, too)

I was watching the "Run Lindsay, Run" game the other day and before completing the pass to Scott, the announcers said Belue was 6 for 15 through the air.

I know it was a different era for passing but yeah that seemed a bit telling to me

Interesting that you remember him. I couldn't tell you the name of any player on an LSU team before about 5 years ago, except for Cannon.

I can do better than that.

In the Sugar Bowl versus Notre Dame, Belue was 1 for 13 for 7 yards in the game. The only pass he completed converted a third and 7 with 2 minutes to go in the game to help UGA run out the clock.

Belue is beloved for winning a natty, but he's nowhere close to a Top 10 QB all time in Athens.

Damn sounds like he would've fit right in with our QBs from 2009-2017

Not in the top ten. He did make some crucial plays throughout his career. He also had some awful performances throughout his career. Without the 80 championship and the Lindsay Scott play, he is John Lastinger. I know it was a totally different game back then. Qb didn’t have to win the game for you, just don’t lose it. Ball security was a must and still is. He had 32 tds and 32ints in his career. The real question is was Buck a better qb or radio personality? Really don’t like him as a sports talk show host. Way too critical of others play when he was average at best.

and UGA won that game for a national title so it reminds me of Jay Barker vs Miami in January 1993. He was 4 of 13 for 18 yards and 2 interceptions. This in spite of the fact that David Palmer was a great receiver and caught about anything he could get one hand on. I remember Alabama being on about the 4 yard line and Barker missed a wide open receiver in the endzone. Alabama won the game with a good running game and one of the best defenses ever in college football. To be fair, Barker was a freshman and he did get considerably better by his junior and senior seasons.

Thinks that's a little harsh. He was a very good athlete and was 1st team all SEC in 1981 and led the SEC in passing efficiency that year

I believe he still holds the single season BA record for UGA baseball.

He completed one pass in the 1980 Sugar Bowl LOL...he was a winner is what he was...he wasn't a great QG by any stretch but he was and is a DGD....he was the epitome of Vince Dooley football teams in my opinion...not loaded with talent but solid fundamentally and they always had a lot of heart...never an easy out..just a well coached, adhesive TEAM....something not seen in sports today but common in the era and Dooley was as good at it as anyone....

Boise State is that kind of program today....very rare. May not win many titles but they are a very hard out...

Unbeleivable that in 1980 era CFB you could win a natty going 1 for 13 passing for 7 yards...but really, why would anyone chunk the ball when Herschel could tote it 50 times a game and get 3-4 yards on every carry??? And, most importantly, do it in the second half to keep the other teams offense off the field. Dooley was no fool....he was as good as there ever was at making the most of what he had available and he damn sure got as much out one of the best CFB players ever as there was to get. It wasn't pretty usually and it had to be frustrating as hell to be on the other side of it.....but it made UGA a pretty tough out every week....

He's only remembered because he hosts a 3 hour radio show in Atlanta every day, and has for decades, and hosts segments on the local news station. If he had just faded away and not stayed in public light, nobody under the age 40 would have ever heard of him. Even UGA fans.

Larry never said "Oh you Buck Belue!" or "Buck Belue! Buck Belue! Buck Belue!"
