It does feel like there's a new narrative coming out regarding the money. From Phillip Marshal:

--------
The buyout thing is overplayed. First, no one has to write a check for $25 million. It is paid over time. Second, the next coach won't likely make $7 million a year, so you are saving money there. If they decide they want to make a move, they can make a move, the football facility will still be built. I don't know what's going to happen, but it's not going to be a situatioun where they believe they need to make a change but don't do it because it's too expensive.
---------

How can you shite can a good coach that will almost always win 8 games and year and never totally crash like 2012 Chizik?

He's a good coach.

You make it sound cheap to boot this coaching staff.

Gus' pay this year is $6.8MM with a $26.6MM buyout, and that's just HIS contract. Auburn would also have to buyout the rest of that staff who's currently the 6th highest paid staff. Gus gets 50% of the buyout within 30 days of termination and the rest spread out over a few years.

Well, in theory, if that happens, Steele is probably keeping most of his defensive staff I would guess. We'd be getting rid of the offensive staff, which really isn't making that much outside of Gus.

I mean, if it wasn't for Steele, it is very possible we would have crashed like 2012 Chizik.

ETA: not sure how that helps Auburn's offense.

it's not gus

and he would likely allow an OC to come in with his own folks and remain hands off

Kevin Steele, as in owner of #7 on ESPN's list of Top Ten Worst Coaching Decisions?

quote:

Baylor had UNLV beat -- they led 24-21 with about 20 seconds left in the Sept. 11, 1999 matchup between two lousy teams. The Bears had the ball on the Rebels eight-yard line, and if they had taken a knee, the game would have been over. Instead, Baylor head coach Kevin Steele called for a run. Darrell Bush almost made it to the goal line, but UNLV forced a fumble, and the Rebels' Kevin Thomas returned it 99 yards for a touchdown.

"I have an explanation, but it doesn't hold water," Steele said after the game. "We talked about creating an attitude and getting after people. We were simply trying to create an attitude."

Sounds like a Life Champion guy, IMHO.

It's interesting and I have close friends that are AU fans. It's a discussion I see all the time, hell they were doing toasts after AU lost to UGA on Saturday because "Bama won't go to the playoffs", they weren't even pissed that their own team had 3 losses, just that Bama was out of the CFP.

Hmmm...sounds like Auburn fans trying to convince Bama to keep Shula. He's a mediocre coach, and you know it.

It's going to take Josh Moon coming out of the woodwork before the real scoop gets to the surface.

Chizik's record in the BigXII wasn't much different, and he got a Natty at AU.

Auburn apparently makes horrible coaches geniuses for a minute, and makes genius coaches average.

Well if history tells us anything, any replacement hire will chalk up at least one great season in his tenure and it'll get you into the CFP.

True.

Pretty amazing thinking that all 5 of AU's most recent football coaches (not counting Oliver as interim) have, at a minimum, won the division. Four of those five have won the SEC, and two have lead a team to the national title game.

I agree.

Auburn should hire Steele then wait for the Natties to pile up.

He would be a good choice but maybe he is considering retirement.

and he would bring in a good OC. Your HC does not have to be a good OC guy to know how to bring in a good OC guy

Seems risky. I'd think if they are buying out Gus they have a bigger target in mind.
