Why would Texas be #1?

“Best recruiting area in the country and endless resources!”

Okay…why haven’t they won anything of note since 2005?

Every single article will quote the EADA reports because they are the easiest to find. They just aren't a clear picture of what is happening. UF isn't spending $220M on athletics and only $45M on football. Same with Texas. What one school calls a football expense is called something else for the other.

Not sure what source you want, I'm just saying the way these EADA reports work. Was something I was involved with for a while. I can grab UF's budget I guess if you need to see it, it's on their website. UGA makes theirs readily available too.

Well you could at least finally provide a link instead of "trust me, bro."

FWIW - here is what chatgpt returns on EADA reporting

quote:

No Standardized Accounting: Unlike corporate financial reporting, EADA data allows for varying interpretations of expenses, making it hard to compare "apples to apples" between institutions.

Inconsistent Cost Categorization: Schools choose differently whether to include certain capital expenses, coaching salaries, or indirect institutional overhead in their reports.

Revenue Recognition Timing: Reporting of donor contributions often varies based on when the funds are received versus when they are spent, leading to discrepancies.

Practice Player & Roster Discrepancies: Treatment of practice players, multi-sport athletes, and non-duplicated student-athlete counts causes inaccuracies in participation numbers.

Lack of Rigorous Review: Unlike NCAA financial reports, EADA reports do not always require external review, increasing the likelihood of reporting errors.

Hate to say it but I would put Ohio State at number one.

I think the only thing working against OSU is OSU fans. Even Saban said they need to STFU last season. The expectations of the fanbase is outsizing realistic results

So I would have Texas #1. They have everything OSU/UGA etc. have, but for some reason their fanbase is fine being a top 10 program and not winning national titles. Their fans seem way more reasonable which has to help a coach not feel the heat daily

U-Trans does deserve to be #1 on this list.

1. Tons of $$$$$ and great resources.
2. Actual alumni believe it's a sin to say anything bad about a current coach, no matter how terrible he is.
3. The vast majority of the fanbase doesn't actually care about or understand football, they spend the majority of home games socializing in suites or at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center.
4. The fanbase travels not for the football game, but to experience "the finest dining and hotel experiences" available. Usually with some ridiculous alumni event featuring a band from the 90s. (I've had to remind dozens of friends who can't wait for the LSU game this season and who want to use my tickets that LSU is in Baton Rouge and not New Orleans, not that they care).
5. Other than the super rich alumni who enjoy a fun social engagement and like to travel, the rest of the U-Trans fanbase snuck across the border and purchased their brunt orange clothing from a clearance bin at Walmart.

No Michigan, but Texas A&M is there?

That’s because even if you get fired they keep paying their coaches for years.

But yeah, otherwise absurd that Michigan isn’t listed over them.

I find this question so fascinating. What are we evaluating? Frankly, usc is the best job in the country and it’s not close.

LSU? Maybe one of the worst jobs in FBS.

What the heck are you evaluating to come up with those opinions?

How is USC the best job in the country when they aren't even the best job on the west coast anymore?

Top college football coaching gigs

As a former coach who was in the profession for 20 years, I think there’s a few ways of looking at the “best gig” that are true of many professions.

Ambition vs. job security vs. freedom.

Do you want the program where you’re most likely to win if you’re an excellent coach up to the challenge and willing to commit insane hours? Or do you want the program that’s the best combination of pay, resources, expectations, and can be more easily sustained long term by an average/good coach?

Winning and money aren’t everything. There are plenty of sharp Main Street bankers who could have worked on Wall Street but wanted something quieter that allowed for more personal freedom. Some coaches are the same way.

There aren't any "bad" jobs in D1 CFB... Even bottom of the barrel jobs pay pretty well anymore. Five years at Kennesaw State... Be reasonably frugal with your money... and you end up with a pretty good nest egg... even if you fail and have to go down a level or three.

That Stockstill dude at Middle Tennessee was a perfect example of the guy you are talking about. He was there forever... Made good money for a bunch of years.
