Similar to some of these discussions about the playoffs, they had the perfect scenario for it to happen, too.
Only 1 power 5 team had 1 loss and 0 ties (Washington).........but that team didn't win the Pac 12 and go to the Rose Bowl, USC did.
Florida went 9-1-1, Nebraska 10-2, Boston College 10-2 and 3 SWC teams went 10-2/9-2-1.
And even then, it is pretty patently absurd that BYU won the national title that year. Their big season opening win over #3 Pitt ended up being a win over 3-7-1 Pitt. They didn't beat a SINGLE TEAM ranked in the final AP Top 25. And, of course, they beat Michigan in the Holiday Bowl on a hail mary. Michigan went 6-6.

Well luckily it looks as though Bama is at the end of it's dynasty. Clemson beat them down for the natty last year and LSU took it to them at their place. With LSU and Georgia both reaching elite status that'll make it harder for Saban to recruit.
What college football needs is for the PAC-12 to get it's shite together because outside of Ohio State teams from the south are the only teams winning nattys.
