The first tournament, in 1947, was an 8 team single elimination tournament. Four teams each were put into two playoff brackets, named the "Eastern Playoff" and the "Western Playoff." The winner of each bracket moved on to the College World Series, which was, at that time, a 2 team best-of-three game series.

In the 75 years of the CWS, there have only been 30 different schools to win the Series. They are in descending order of the number of titles won:

1. USC - 12
2. LSU, Texas - 6
4. Arizona, Arizona State - 5
6. Cal-State Fullerton, Miami - 4
8. Minnesota, Oregon State - 3
10. California, Michigan, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Stanford, Vanderbilt - 2

16-30. Coastal Carolina, Florida, Fresno State, Georgia, Holy Cross, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Rice, UCLA, Virginia, Wake Forest, Wichita State - 1

It is, indeed, an honor to even make it to Omaha, Nebraska, for the College World Series, and an even bigger honor to win it all.

Congratulations and the best to: ARKANSAS, AUBURN, OKLAHOMA, OLE MISS, TEXAS and TEXAS A&M! Good luck!!

Sad to see such a large gap. But that's what happens when you take care of business when it matters most.

LSU has been to the finals 7 times, winning 6.

SC has been to the finals 6 times, only winning 2.

2 of those 6 losses came against Texas - including the last year where they used the single game format.

Don't give up...it's only been a few years ago that you won 2 titles...things run in cycles and the Gamecocks will always be having a say. Y'all will be back.

It's not easy to win the CWS. Florida State had a great coach and a great baseball program for years, but never won a title.

We have 2 Runner-ups and 12 total trips to the CWS and yet to bag a title.

Yep....FSU never winning one considering the teams they've had is kind of mind blowing.

On a related sad note, Kentucky is the only SEC school to have never made the College World Series. I'm so fricking sick of this shite. I love baseball. Grew up going to Coach Madisons summer camps and fall workouts and all that stuff. What I wouldn't give to see us have a good baseball program

I see that Wake Forest has a championship. It’s a good thing they’re not in Omaha this year or it might have triggered a FORFEIT.

Kentucky has had some good clubs over the years. I know you are at a bit of disadvantage early in the year because of weather. But the potential is still there for you guys to make to the CWS. Not out of the question at all.

Over the course of 75 years, 113 teams have made at least one appearance. Obviously, Texas leads with 38 appearances, Miami 25, FSU 23, AZ State 22, USCw 21, OK St. 20, LSU 18, Stanford 18, Fullerton 18, AZ 18, Clemson 12, State 12, FL 12, Arky 11, NC 11, OK 11, USCe 11, Northern Colorado 10 all have at least 10. No. Col was a powerhouse back in the 50’s and 60’s.

Baseball is the one sport where the little guy can make a run. Fresno State or Coastal Carolina would never win the football or basketball NC. But they did in baseball. Stony Brook made the CWS.

Those things happen which makes it fun and entertaining. ND beating Tennessee. Heck the 1989 State team was probably our all time best team and we lost NC in the Regional final and did not make it to Omaha.

something must be wrong with you list.

i was told Tennessee was the bestest team in the history of forever and i don’t see them on your list of champions.

FSU with 23 appearances and no titles. How is this even possible. Also, what happened to USC?
