This. He has done a heck of a job with the scholarship reductions he came into. This is the first year Tennessee is back at full scholarship availability from the McDonalds bag issue. I remember shaking my head at UGA moving on from Richt for only winning 9-10 games a year (keep in mind what Tennessee had gone through with Kiffin, Dooley, Jones). I get it now though, and if Heup leaves or ever gets the boot, I’d hope we have our next guy lined up.

Kirby Smart was ready and available. If both of those factors had not been present, firing Richt would have been much, much more chancy.

That may be the most accurate description of Heupel I've heard.

Well, no.

Josh Heupel - a peak-human vigilante who uses fear, intellect, and relentless discipline rather than superpowers to wage a war on crime ( college football ).

Thing is, there really aren't any great coaches. Kirby? Cig? After that, there's a pretty steep drop off. Not sure who would be in that next tier.

LSU gonna be mad!

They took out a second mortgage on every building on campus to get Kiffin and get rid of Kelly.

Well, I always forget about Kiffin being an elite HC.

Elite coaches get fired on tarmacs, get dismissed before playoff games, and have zero playoff wins on their resumes.

He is...

The one thing about Heupel's situation is that his dad and sister are still around here as well.

I don't know if that matters to Heupel or not... but it is fact.

I think on balance...Tennessee is probably in a better situation than OU is under the current landscape of CFB... in terms of resources and recruiting, etc.

Of course that one billionaire jumping on board can change that.

Unfortunately, a lot of Oklahoma's big money people are now totally invested in making sure the Thunder stay at the top of things in the NBA.

And were are short on those types of guys compared to the state of Tennessee.

Heupel is objectively a good coach and definitely top 5 in this conference. H

Is it definite? Maybe he squeaks in at 5 but DeBoer, Kirby, Kiffin, Sark, are all above him IMO. Some may would place Elko at #5.

Heupel inherited a team that was 20-27 overall and 10-24 in conference in the 4 years prior to him taking over. DeBoer inherited a team that was 49-6 overall and 31-3 in conference in the 4 years prior to taking over. Heupel is 2-1 in head-to-head matchups against DeBoer since he arrived in Bama. So, he inherited a significantly better program, and loses head-to-head matchups to the inferior Heupel coached teams.

Put Steve Sarkisian at any school in this conference not named Texas, and he would've been fired by now
I’d be against firing Sark. His offense hasn’t been good, but I’ve seen too many programs fire decent coaches and wind up in the dumpster for a long time afterwards. Tennessee fans, of all folks, should know that.

He's going to need a star QB to get him over the hump. I agree, that he's a good coach, best coach Tennessee's had in years. However, he's not a great coach and will need help getting over the hump. If he can keep a serviceable defense in place and hit on a star QB, I think he can win a NC. But he's not going to win a NC with anything less than that at QB. I can now say the same thing for Alabama.

I think both sides would be amenable to that.

I can promise you that he still has his house in Edmond, OK. But it isn't like he can't afford to have two places given Josh' salary.
