He's a solid coach, but he's not a coach that you pay two buyouts to get.

Year Team Overall Conference Standing Bowl/playoffs
UCF Knights (American Athletic Conference) (2018–2020)
2018 UCF 12–1 8–0 1st (East) L Fiesta
2019 UCF 10–3 6–2 2nd (East) W Gasparilla
2020 UCF 6–4 5–3 T–3rd L Boca Raton
UCF: 28–8 19–5

Tennessee Volunteers (Southeastern Conference) (2021–present)
2021 Tennessee 7–6 4–4 3rd (Eastern) L Music City
2022 Tennessee 11–2 6–2 2nd (Eastern) W Orange
2023 Tennessee 9–4 4–4 3rd (Eastern) W Citrus
2024 Tennessee 10–3 6–2 T–2nd L CFP First Round
2025 Tennessee 8–5 4–4 T–8th L Music City
2026 Tennessee 6–2 3–2
Tennessee: 51–22 27–18
Total: 79–30

He's a decent coach. If you come off of the coaching hires that we've had , he's been super exceptional , but that was our own administration's ineptitude

He's Tennessee's Mark Richt. He's much better than what he inherited; he's built a solid foundation, but he can't get over the hump.

That may be the most accurate description of Heupel I've heard.

Much like Richt, you better have something better on deck if you were to grow tired of him. Big risk to take.

An important thing to remember is that he had to play Alabama and Georgia every season unitl this season.

It took UGA almost two decades to make the move from Richt so i dont think Tennessee is gonna move on anytime soon

Heupel is objectively a good coach and definitely top 5 in this conference. He is not a great coach. We have gotten more out of him than anyone thought possible when he was hired. Eventually, Tennessee will have to make a tough call, as they did with Johnny Majors all those years ago.

I would question that he would entertain an offer from Oklahoma.

I won't say never, but I'd be outright surprised to see him hired by Oklahoma.

That said, I didn't really think you'd hire BV either.

Thing is, there really aren't any great coaches. Kirby? Cig? After that, there's a pretty steep drop off. Not sure who would be in that next tier.

I'm not a UTK fan. But Heupel has done better there than I expected, and he's put y'all on solid ground. I don't think it's wise to move on anytime soon. Look at Penn State. They didn't want to wait for Franklin, and now they're a mess. Firing good doesn't often lead to great. Nebraska still hasn't recovered from firing Pellini.

This. He has done a heck of a job with the scholarship reductions he came into. This is the first year Tennessee is back at full scholarship availability from the McDonalds bag issue.

I remember shaking my head at UGA moving on from Richt for only winning 9-10 games a year (keep in mind what Tennessee had gone through with Kiffin, Dooley, Jones). I get it now though, and if Heup leaves or ever gets the boot, I’d hope we have our next guy lined up.

Is it definite? Maybe he squeaks in at 5 but DeBoer, Kirby, Kiffin, Sark, are all above him IMO. Some may would place Elko at #5.

I don't think Heupel has peaked. The DC hire has been amazing. If we weren't stuck with 2 freshman QBs there'd be outrageous buzz rn.

Sark is not above Heupel. Give Heupel the same resources as Sark and Heupel would have done more. Sark is not a top 5 coach in this conference. I think most Aggies would rather have Heupel than Elko, but I can't speak for them

Put Steve Sarkisian at any school in this conference not named Texas, and he would've been fired by now

I would say he is an upgrade from some of the recent hires, no doubt.

Do you have confidence that your AD can make a good hire this time.....IF Huepel is fired?
