Not really.

Lacrosse brings in crowds at only a handful of FBS football schools on the mid-Atlantic (e.g., Syracuse, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio State, Notre Dame, & Navy), and nowhere else.

At least Big Ten hockey managed to draw greater attendance figures than SEC women's basketball last season. Lacrosse only draws about 1/10 of the same attendance as those sports, and at a much smaller selection of schools.

Even the #1 school in home attendance (Syracuse) only managed to draw about 27,000 fans last season. Compare that to 257,000 for North Dakota hockey, or 216,000 for Tennessee women's basketball.

Although attempts to get the pros rolling have been made with Major League Lacrosse (including teams in Annapolis & Charlotte), in reality this is a league that few people have heard about, with semi-pro players who only play in their spare time from the real jobs. This is unlike the NHL or WNBA, in which real professionals earn money as their primary source of income.

Thus, I think lacrosse should remain a club sport.

Just my two cents...

Mens Soccer should be WAYYY ahead of Lacrosse in the pecking order.

Most popular sport in the world and the SEC doesn't even field teams.

At least soccer has a legit pro level for players to aspire to joining.

I think Title IX has outlived it's usefullness. Women's sports are established now, all it does is hurt minor men's sports.

Are you suggesting that since women's sports are established, a repeal of Title IX would permit the addition of men's "minor" sports without any reduction in the number of women's teams?

Is some reduction possible? Sure. Still, there are typically about 3 more women's sports than men's (Volleyball and Soccer the most common) to help even out the number. The SEC (including A&M) has a lot of girls on Equestrian scholarship. Nothing wrong with Equestrian but it is not the kind of sport where many girls are needing a scholarship to play, 99% of girls that do Equestrian come from wealthy families because the sport is so expensive to get to that point.

I think you would have a lot more addition than subtraction, esp in the SEC. For instance it would cost very little to get Volleyball and Soccer going as most of the facilities would be dual purpose with the women. Most of the startup would just be the scholarships and staff.

How is it really fair that a lot of men have to be on half scholarships in sports like baseball as well? That's a big factor in why a lot of kids turn down college to go pro, it's not a full ride like Football is. Every girl's softball player is on a full ride though and baseball brings in a lot more revenue than softball.

The purpose of Title IX was to change attitudes about women's sports and to give them a chance to be established. That's done now. Title IX now just hurts the men's sports and prevent thousands of men from getting a free education every year. It needs to go.

Lacrosse is a yankee sport for yankees. Let the Mizzou's of the world play lacrosse, keep it out of the SEC.

Fastest growing sport in America. Including the South.

I played on a sanctioned Lacrosse team in high school. It's a fun and exciting sport.

This... I'm not personally a fan as a spectator but it looks like it would be fun to play. Definitely on the rise.

Wrestling before lacrosse. The south has some great hot beds for wrestling, but many kids do not go on to wrestle in college because it means going North or to a small school.

Wrestling hot beds in the south? Just to clarify, I don't think they're talking about Jerry Lawler.

Gonna have to disagree with you there Crispy. It's a great sport that is spreading for a reason.

How long has Florida had the program? I know the girls program is relatively new. A friend's daughter committed to play there a couple of years ago and a big part of her decision was that it was a new program and she'd contribute immediately and be one of the first to start the legacy of ladies lacrosse at Florida.

Florida officially started play in 2010. In their first three years they have won two AFL regular season championships and advanced to the quarterfinals in the NCAA tournament last year.

That women have more sports than men is not the issue. The issue is equitable allocation of scholarship opportunities.

The NCAA limits softball to 12 scholarships. Baseball is virtually the same,l1.7. Whether these are awarded as full or partial scholarships is determined by the school.

The purpose of Title IX was to promote equal opportunities for men and women. In the area of sports, prior to Title IX, men had thousands of scholarships that enabled them to get a free education that were not available to women.

What you are advocating is a return to the good old days of allocating more university resources for men by adding new men's sports with no corresponding new opportunities for women, and, in fact, taking away some of the opportunities now available from them to fund new scholarships for men.

A different and more lawful approach might be to add Lacrosse (or whatever) for both men and women.

I agree; my son plays lacrosse and loves it. I remember watching it as a kid on ESPN before they were able to land the bigger sports, and it certainly is fun to watch.

Re: wrestling, NOLA is/was a hotbed for that sport, and if I remember rightly, LSU was 3rd or 4th when Title IX forced the school to drop it. I wish there was a way to reinstate it, as it always seems to help football too. Some of the best fullbacks I've seen in the NFL were also wrestlers at the college level-absolute beasts who blocked like they were 30 lbs heavier, and nearly tailback-quality athletes with the ball in their hands.

I knew a bunch of guys on the lacrosse team all through college. They had a house right across from Kyle Field and threw awesome Halloween parties. The president was a buddy of mine since high school. Jewish porn mogul father. No joke. Multi-million dollar trust fund baby.

When you can have a women's soccer team but not a men's soccer team, you have a problem.

The SEC needs men's soccer. There is great talent down here and would gain rapid popularity, at least more than lacrosse

SC, Vandy and Kentucky do compete in NCAA Men's Soccer. In fact, all 3 schools are associate members of Conference USA for the sport. Our soccer stadium has both SEC (for womens) and Conference USA signage.
