re: Florida isn't that attractive of a job any longer
Posted by winyahpercy on 11/17/14 at 6:54 am
IMO, UF and UGA are the 2 best jobs in the country because they have the right balance of program resources, recruiting base, and historical performance with job pressure. Saban in his first year was one loss away from getting enough bricks thrown through his living room window to build a outside BBQ. Alabama is a great job when your winning but it's also got the most pressure. Saban has been a perfect fit. In fact, I think it time to start making the point that he's accomplished more than the Bear, considering that Saban's tenure was more challenging w/ today's competition and NCAA rules.

No offense to Starkville, but Oxford is a better scene for producers to work with, not to mention higher ranked teams. Otherwise, it would be Starkville.

in Columbia's defense, USC was established in the oldest state capital in the SEC as an extension of the legislature, so the campus started adjacent to the State Capital. our original campus, "the horseshoe" with the first separate college library building was the inspiration for jefferson's "lawn" at UVA. it was almost 70 years prior to the advent of college football (Rutgers-Princeton 1869), so no one had the forethought to set aside land for a stadium and parking for tailgating. LSU didn't move to Baton Rouge until after they started playing football, so they had a better idea of the space needed to establish a state university. in hindsight, we should have put the school in Charleston with a stadium overlooking the Ashley River and we would have 10 year waiting list.
re: Seriously Aggies, what is this?
Posted by winyahpercy on 8/28/14 at 9:44 am
the Ags may have found a loophole w/ freedom to assemblage w/ our State House, but i'm pretty sure we've still got public sodomy & buggery laws on the books that could have prevented this.
re: Outside of your fanbase, what sec team holds the most fans in your state?

In SC, it's easily UGA. Next may be Auburn or Alabama followed by UT.

"Head coach Steve Spurrier has had as many 11-win seasons in nine years at South Carolina (3) as he had in his 12 years at Florida"
"Head coach Steve Spurrier is 23-1 all-time in season openers as a collegiate head coach. His only season-opening loss, ironically, was a 27-21 loss to the Gamecocks in Columbia on Sept. 2, 1989, while the head coach at Duke University."

UGA (-7.5) over Clemson.

same for Nick Saban against WVU because his dream is to return to the hollers of his home state and one day lead the Mountaineers.

Clemson's OC Chad Morris develops gameplans and evaluates performance based on stats, one of which is the # of plays per game. I think this drives Spurrier nuts, so he purposely likes to grind it out against them once we have the lead because Morris can't adapt, and their players only know the system, which leads them to get frustrated and careless. Otherwise, if the offense is working, Spurrier wants to score as quickly as possible.

Spurrier 101:
use the run to set up the pass. so if we're having some success running out of the backfield, get ready for the long ball on 1st or 2nd down. and Dylan can throw it better than Conner. Conner's ability to improvise w/ his feet was valuable, but not necessarily core to Spurrier's Fun & Gun. SC's running game is not like Alabama that will beat you down into submission. Spurrier like to score and if things go well, we'll score more through the air than on the ground, even though the ground game is what will win it.
A&M needs to try to get SC into predictable passing downs to try to rattle Dylan. Coin toss may set the tone, because whomever win it will likely choose to receive and have the ability to score first. SC rarely scores first, but if they do, it may mean things are going well.

there is no crescent moon on the SC flag. it's a gorget. symbolic from the uniforms of our men at Fort Moultrie that fought to win this country's independence. while the folks in Texas were being subservient to Spain, France, Mexico, Costa Rica or whomever.

if it was based on online voting, Howard Stern would be starting QB for the Jets.

Anyone notice Ray Goff on the SC sideline as an Asst. Coach?

I was there. 11 years old. We sat on the front row. Couldn't see crap because of the damn hedges. People forget that SC was the highest ranked team UGA played that year, except for ND in the Sugar.
re: South Carolina over the years ....

good stuff scrooster. some other little tidbits to your story. we were in close discussion w/ FSU, Penn St. and I think Miami to create our own conference in the 80's. word got out to the Big 10, who decided to grab Penn St. SEC expansion was started by Dick Bestwick, who was Vince Dooley's right hand man at UGA and also worked some at the SEC office. Bestwick & Dooley had actually brought up the subject at a SEC meeting of expanding and adding USC in the 80's before PSU's jump to the B10. we then hired Bestwick to be AD to replace Marcum who was fired. Bestwick, w/ Dooley's support again made a plea to the SEC for expansion w/ USC. Bestwick didn't last long at USC because of health issues, but he supposedly did get the SEC to create an expansion committee to explore the idea. some USC BOT members were aware of what was going on and lobbying for support w/ UGA. King Dixon just walked into the situation. I learned this from one of the BOT members that was involved.
A few years ago, I actually met Dick Bestwick in Athens who later retired from UGA and he confirmed it all (in front of a bunch of UGA friends that didn't realize that UGA played such an integral role.)
I agree we had a lot of missed opportunities to do something great like w/ Dietsel and Carlen, but the SEC more than made up for it. I wish the University would do something to recognize Dick Bestwick's contribution.

That's actually a negative 1 because he's the AD of our rival. If we make the playoff, his job gets harder.
