There has been all this talk that the SEC is terrible this year. Well, I got to looking at the standings and realized that maybe the SEC isn't so bad. Then I did some more digging...

yeah, an abnormal amount of coaches got fired, and some of the traditional powers (UT, UF) have sucked. But other than that, I'm not really seeing any hard figures that prove the SEC sucks this year.

-3 legitimate playoff contenders

-10 bowl-eligible teams *if you count Ole Miss with their 6 wins* (the most of any conference)

-Oh, well the SEC pads their schedules with cupcakes. That's why they have so many bowl-eligible teams, right? The SEC has played a combined 18 games against P5 non-conference teams. That's second only to the ACC with 21. The Pac-12 played 11, the Big 10 played 13, and Big-12 played 6.

-the SEC had a 9-9 record against those P5 non-conference opponents. That may not look great, but here are the other P5 conferences records.

Pac-12: 8-3
Big 10: 7-6
Big-12: 2-4
ACC: 8-13

And I'd put the top 5 teams from the SEC (Bama, UGA, Auburn, LSU, Miss. St.) against the top 5 from any other P5 conference any day of the week.

Let's see what happens during bowl season.

Well said. But half the teams are firing coaches and at least half of those teams will be on the decline (Tennessee can't really decline any further).

Where the bottom teams are isvmore telling than the top teams on a down year.

The SEC dumpster fire myth

Is just relative to the unheard of dominance from 05-12, and even into 2014.

We are still as good as anyone else right now, but we've considered everyone else dumpster fires for so long that our standards make us one too

Don't forget being a conference with 2 (TWO) playoff members. *fingers crossed*

And deserved or not, LSU is the 3 point Troy debacle away from being in the top ten as well.

UGA is probably as good as every team in America, except 2-3 teams. Just because the other few teams ahead of UGA expose our disparity between us and them doesn't mean we're not better than 97-98% of teams out there. Come Saturday we'll either win a close one or lose about how BAMA did or a little less. Either way we're a top 4-7 team this year.

I actually think Auburn or UGA would walk through both Wisconsin and OU to get to Clemson.

SEC: 9-9 (Not winning record)

Pretty much puts the SEC in the middle of the pack. Btw.. LSU lost to Troy and got the shite stomped out of them by Miss St. Why are you ignoring the bottom half of the conference? Vanderbilt and Tennessee combined for two wins against P5 teams this season (if you don't count Vanderbilts win over Tennessee).

Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, and Arkansas combined for 8-32 in SEC play this season

2017 SEC Standings
EAST
Georgia 7-1
South Carolina 5-3
Kentucky 4-4
Missouri 4-4
Florida 3-5
Vanderbilt 1-7
Tennessee 0-8

WEST
Auburn 7-1
Alabama 7-1
LSU 6-2
Mississippi State 4-4
Texas A&M 4-4
Ole Miss 3-5
Arkansas 1-7

The SEC wasn’t great this season. Still 3 really good teams and 2-3 more pretty solid ones. Just a more populated bottom than other years.

Still no team managed to go undefeated in league play. It’s not like it’s not been done before.

Where did you get those numbers again?

I was tracking 4-6

Wins: tOSU/Arkie/Pitt/ASU
Losses: MD/USCw/VT/Vandy/Iowa/Duke

The SEC was pretty weak this year and hat a shite ton of turmoil with the head coaches getting fired. That's the bottom line.

People have said the SEC East is terrible. The West has 4 ranked teams and a 12-2 record Head to Head with the East. They aren’t comparable.

I didn't. I pointed out that no conference has more bowl-eligible teams than the SEC.

Every conference has bottom-dwellers each year.

You do realize that conference records are a zero-sum game, correct? If some teams have winning records, then SOMEBODY has to have losing records.

Yes -- and if parity was high like the OP suggests those losses would be spread out. Not condensed into 5 bottom feeding teams.

I didn't say parity was high. I said the SEC doesn't suck like many are claiming. Does that mean every team is good? No.

There's no such thing as a conference that has both national championship contenders and no cellar-dwellers. If you have teams with 7-1 and 6-2 conference records, somebody is going to have the 0-8 and 1-7 records. It's the nature of the beast.

EVERY conference's bottom 4 or 5 teams are going to have shitty conference records.
