Given how stupid everything is now with NIL and the portal, would you guys be in favor of the NFL going ahead and implementing a minor league system where the top players can go get paid and do whatever they want and college football gets the rest but goes back to the old "amateur" rules?
Obviously the quality would be a little lower but is that a trade off you would be willing to make to keep the sport close to what it used to be?

I would be up for it but it may not be economically doable.

Football and basketball yes

I mean, we could just strip scholarships away and turn it into DIII.

I'm torn.
It was outright unamerican that a player couldn't profit from their NIL while others around them could.
I also think players should have the freedom to transfer just as any other student, especially considering that a coach can simply chase the money or a more prestigious job.
However, I hate seeing the tradition of college football so radically altered.

CFB is never going back. That genie is out of the bottle. NIL will apply whether there is minor league football or not. And college NIL will likely pay better than minor league football for the elite players. And the facilities/conditions will damn sure be better.

I don't see the NFL investing to build its own farm system when CFB already does it for them.

This. CFB generates billions of dollars. To my knowledge none of the other major sports with a farm league generate anything remotely close to that. Football is a very expensive sport with large rosters, so I'm not sure how you'd make the math work and have anything remotely close to the preparation and support provided by the CFB system.

Oh I'm certain it will never happen, I'm just curious if college football fans would rather it happen?

And the players are only worth the NIL money because of the schools. No one would give a shite about Joe Blow that plays for the Birmingham Ironworkers. I would rather watch a student athlete play for my university.

This.
My friends that played college and minor league baseball tell me that the minors exist because the Majors don't care if their farm teams actually win. They are purely about development, and if a player can't knock the guy out above him quickly then he's gone to make room for a guy one year younger.

I can't imagine this will go on forever can it? Could players avoid sitting a year when they transfer by using NIL $ to pay their own tuition?

NFL would be opposed because they already have a free minor league system with colleges and now you have the USFL which, IMHO, will fail once again as it had before. Too much already. I agree that colleges should be colleges but money is driving everything to lunacy.

Tell that to the two 5-stars that are playing at Jackson State next year.

Why would the NFL want that? They already have a minor league and it doesn't cost them a dime. Minor League Football is not profitable and cannnot compete with CF in the Fall.

BINGO. And, CFB has been paying players for decades, NIL is not changing CFB, you are just seeing the payments.

"Do you think Shaq got rich playing in Orlando?"
"No, he got rich playing in college. Everyone knows that."

Once again this just proves that NIL is being used to pay and recruit players to come to a school. No real business is going to benefit from some high school player promoting their product.
Most players wont have built any real Name or image until at least two or three seasons on campus.
