When Spurrier was at UF he used to say that the goal was always to win the SEC every year, because winning the SEC was the only true title and if he won that, the rest would take care of itself. But the playoff (and even in '11 the BCS before it) has rendered the conference title games meaningless. Everyone said they wanted the playoff, but every action has an unintended consequence and this is one of them.

OSU could have just not lost by 31 to Iowa

Now ya'll know why Arkansas never won an SEC title. We knew it was pointless.

This is the same reason for us, too.

You should have won it and it would have mattered...

He won the conference six times and only went to the big dance once. Just shows you how much he knows.

Wisconsin should’ve declined invite to Big 10 title game. Finished year undefeated, made playoffs.

I don’t have an issue with non conference champs making it, as much as teams getting penalized for playing an extra game.

Or scheduled Florida State and Mercer instead.

Yeah, I like that option more...

SECCG winner has made playoffs 4 out of 4 years. Working perfectly. In fact going back to 2006 I think the SECCG winner has made playoff or BCSCG every single year. SECCG still as important and meaningful as ever.

SEC created it.

Fitting if we end it.

I thought the purpose of the CFP format was to always "attempt" to put the best 4 teams in the semis. I don't think it ever said anything about conference champions.

They still matter... ask UGA fans... got them an SECCG W and a berth into the CFPO. It just so happens that at the end of season a 1 loss Bama is 1 of the 4 best teams, even without the conference title.

I know this has been a really tough past 24hours.. get beat down and now both of your most hated rivals have a shot at the NC.. heck they may play each other in the final game.. now that has to sting.

Seven times using your own logic.

Looks like it made the Big 10 title game irrelevant. And Auburn’s November

Look at this way. This will give us an eight team playoff which is needed and two Clemson or Oklahoma was winning this anyway. Love the fact Bama has been in every college football playoff but I just think Clemson is too talented along the defensive line for Alabama to overcome.

How did the selection committee make the conference title meaningless? Without a playoff under the old BCS, Ohio State would be in the same position they are in right now. In fact, SEC champion UGA would be left out of the national title. The playoff has made conference title games matter even more because a team like UGA was able to play their way into the playoff with a title victory.
