I disagree. I am bummed about not getting the SEC, still proud of winning the SEC West and believe any NY6 Bowl matters. Not excited about UCF for all the reasons mentioned on this website, but its still a NY6 Bowl.

Nice melt. But to address your issue: it matters in that if AU had won, they would have been in the playoffs. With two losses, that game was the only reason AU even had a chance his year. Just because AU blew it you shouldn't lash out at the system that brought you to the table...for about a week.

this is what the committee did to conference championships by giving bama their 2nd mulligan in 5 years

So would you have preferred that Ohio State get their 3rd mulligan in 4 years? What was the alternative?

It's because people are used to teams being knocked out of a title hunt for a late loss.

Fans just aren't used to the new normal. It's true; titles and rivalry games are indeed devalued, but that's just how it is now. We have 4 spots. Take care of business and you're in. Bottom line.

When Spurrier was at UF he used to say that the goal was always to win the SEC every year, because winning the SEC was the only true title and if he won that, the rest would take care of itself.
Did the SEC winner get left out in 2011 or this year?

The fact that you made his thread and it isn't about Penn State is fricking hilarious.

He won the conference six times and only went to the big dance once. Just shows you how much he knows.

Actually, he went twice. He lost the ‘95 national championship to Nebraska.

Depending on how it goes this year in the matchups, I do think this might speed up an expansion for the number of teams in the playoff.

Two BIG teams ranked 5 and 6 might lead to some pressure after this year.

Twice.

No. Once.

That '97 Sugar Bowl game only became the national title game after #2 Arizona State was upset by Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

The '96 Fiesta Bowl was THE game as soon as the two teams were announced. The Gators wouldn't have played Florida State in the Sugar Bowl if not for the Big Ten and Pac 10's early refusal to participate in the Bowl Coalition/Bowl Alliance/BCS.

It’s like baseball and basketball now. Division and conference titles are neat but they aren’t that big of a deal. The tournament is the big deal. Football just has a crappy tournament right now.

They’ll run this model for a while then expand to 8, run that for a while and expand to 16.

The extra GAME only matters in so much as it gives a team another game to be tabulated. But the conference TITLE is meaningless. It isn't factored into the playoff discussion. Penn State 2016, Ohio State 2017 winning, and Alabama 2011 2017 not playing prove the point.

UCF, Wisconsin

going 0-1 against the top-10, beating #16, and scraping by #23 just isn't play-off worthy. and if it IS playoff worthy.. why on earth does 12-1 Wisconsin get put below 11-1 Alabama?

Now ya'll know why Arkansas never won an SEC title. We knew it was pointless.
It definitely is now. But raising it to 8+ teams is going to make it irrelevant too.

Yeah, because those are guaranteed wins for Ohio State

For the title game to mean anything you would have to consider the record of the teams you allow in the game and the way it is currently decided does not allow for the best two teams to play in the game. Alabama should have played in the CG even after losing to a two loss Auburn team.

12-1 Wisconsin vs 11-1 Alabama.. almost identical resumes. Reality is that name-brand put Bama in just like in 2011. I suppose that's unavoidable because we're all human..
