Once, when the conference's had bowl tie in it mattered some. It used to matter in college basketball too until it was obvious the 4th place acc team was better than the first place sec team and it was decided to go with the best teams in the NCAA tourney.

Now football has done the same. 4 SEC teams would have won the Pac 12 conference in foitball before usc. 3 SEC teams were better than Ohio state in the big 10. Wiscy MIGHT have won 8 games in the SEC. Before they eliminated conference tie ins it mattered. Now with a nationwide playoff it matters none. Get used to it.

going 0-1 against the top-10, beating #16, and scraping by #23 just isn't play-off worthy.

And most years Bama doesn't make it with that resume. But this was a down year with really only 3 truly deserving teams. #4 had to go to someone though and Bama was the best one left.

Come on man. Imagine if LSU was 11-1 right now with its only loss being to Bama. Would you really be arguing for UCF or Wisconsin to go over LSU?

Wisconsin should’ve declined invite to Big 10 title game. Finished year undefeated, made playoffs.

It's got to be a conference rule that you can't decline. Also, the CFP selection committee should reject any team that refuses to play in it's conference championship game.

I don’t have an issue with non conference champs making it, as much as teams getting penalized for playing an extra game.

This^^^.

When Spurrier was at UF he used to say that the goal was always to win the SEC every year, because winning the SEC was the only true title and if he won that, the rest would take care of itself

Well, Georgia got in so...

What's your point?

But that didn't keep Bama out. At the end of the day, that loss only cost us the SEC (which sucks)

But the conference TITLE is meaningless. It isn't factored into the playoff discussion.

It was how Ohio State leapfrogged TCU and Baylor in 2014. OSU won their conference title, TCU and Baylor did not have an outright title, and the committee saw OSU, TCU, and Baylor as all being comparable teams. So the conference title was the tiebreaker for OSU. In 2016 11-2 PSU was not comparable to 11-1 OSU so OSU went in without a title. Same thing this year for 11-1 Alabama over 11-2 OSU.

me? no. i'd want to see LSU in. but i'd expect most college football fans and the committee to choose the 12-1 team who lost in a conference championship game to a top-10 team over the 11-1 team who couldn't win their division.

the resumes were too similar. UCF would have been the best option though.

In fact, SEC champion UGA would be left out of the national title.

The BCS simulators I've seen project that UGA would have jumped Oklahoma, but your point is well taken.

Here's one of them

Florida State with their QB would have wiped the floor with OSU

They set a precedent last season that Alabama benefited from this season. They set a precedent by letting Nebraska and Oklahoma in the BCS without a conference championship.
But keep melting and acting like this has never happened before today.

why on earth does 12-1 Wisconsin get put below 11-1 Alabama?
Because Alabama is one of the 4 best teams in the country. Wiscy isn't.
It's really that simple.

Maybe the 2 recent teams in the SECCG are to blame.

Nah, not the same thing. Alabama didn't have the resume, they just didn't have the Iowa loss. Ohio State and Alabama were comparable, but the committee couldn't get over the Iowa loss. They put more value in that than they did the conference championship. Whether they'll admit it or not, last years playoff factored in, too, I think.

It'll be a good day when Hocutt is gone.

Ohio State with their third string quarterback is the best team in the country.

Except Spurrier whined and complained like a little girl when it was 1st announced that we would have a conference championship game. Which I can understand because UA was not on his schedule the next year.
