Its coming. This season. Teams still running this (i.e Alabama) are in for the final 'nail in the coffin' so-to-speak. And it won't be 'the spread' that kills it. It will be the emergence of the running QB as never before in the SEC

Ironic. We employ the 3-4 and have one of these "running QB's" you speak of

Tebow and Newton couldn't run for shite the last three years against Alabama and they're two of the best dual-threat QBs ever.

Yeah man, that 3-4 just hasn't been working for Bama...

And yeah dude, Jefferson has just been hell on wheels...

actually its kind of going in the other direction. many NFL teams are making the switch to 3-4 not away from it. as for college, i don't know. but, it won't die.

If only CFB coaches who make millions a year had the foresight of a poster on tigerdroppings.

To be fair the OP has the word Boi in in his username, clearly he doesn't have much intelligence to work with...

in all honesty, how many times a game is Alabama in a true 3-4 against spread formations with running QBs?..... I'd say not too much.

even if this was a serious thread, we spend so much time with 4 DL's, two LB's, and five Secondary guys that its a bit misleading to just call us a 3-4 team. Its our base obviously but the key to our 2009 defense was the three CB's and they spent a lot of time out there together.

are one of your secondary guys like a LB when you run the 4-2-5 variant? serious question, i have always been fascinated by the 4-2-5

Um what?

The 3-4 works...if you have the personnel. The keys are the LBs and a true NG. If either of those isn't up to snuff then the defense can struggle to reach its potential. If you can manage to apply pressure to the QB and still hold the front line with just 3 true DL then I don't see how it will ever NOT be effective. Even the great Cam Newton was getting stoned by the 3-4 when he came to Bama and that was probably one of the weakest DL we've fielded since moving to the 3-4.

3-4 is the most flexible defense against any mid-field offense especially bottling up running threats. When a 3-4 is employed with big fast linebackers, corners, and safetys it's as good as defense gets.
