According to various sites, including FanDuel, the average NFL referee salary was set at $205,000 per year starting in 2019.

LINK

The SEC tops out, reportedly, at $3,000 per game.

quote:

NCAA Division I conferences pay significantly more than Division II, and Division III. In the SEC, football officials are typically paid between $800 and $3,000 per game.

The mean salary, $1900, would net them $28,500 assuming a 15 game workload (Unsure how many they actually do)

The SEC revenue for the 2020 FY was 729mil.

7 2 9 MILLION.

It's time address this. Past time. A lot of these guys are only part time officials and carry other occupations. Simply throwing money at is not going to fix it but it can't hurt to make sure we are attracting officials who can afford to be full time to ensure the quality of our product.

I agree that making it a full time job is probably the best/quickest way to improve the quality of officiating. Don’t throw money at these chumps for being the worst officials in the country, though. Paying them more won’t make them less shitty. Restructuring how they approach their jobs would, and paying them more would be a part of that.

Hard to argue with that.

Just out of curiosity, what are the NFL referees doing during the other months out of the year while earning $205k?

Sounds like a pretty sweet gig.

Yeah, I don't know about that.

I know a current one who is very well respected in the field (high up), and he and his wife both have other jobs.

It's probably that those other guys already had money before they started doing it as a side gig.

Striking the balance between attracting/retaining talented refs and replacing the ones needing to be replaced is going to be a tall, tall task. But I whole-heartedly agree.

when I say dont really work full time jobs, I mean they are at a point in their career where they have a job, but they dont really do much work as in 9-5/5 days.

I would rather see them invest in technology that will make the calls easier. Ideally they do both, but make this so easy that even Mark Curles can't mess it up. Hes the Angel Hernandez of college athletics.

This amount does not include under-the-table handouts from Bama for big games.

At that rate I would definitely be easily bought off by Alabama

Exactly.

I know Penn Wagers had a full time job that involved manufacturing I believe and if I had to guess,Hubert Owens ain't independently wealthy.

I went to HS with a former SEC official (played at Bama and SC) his family did well and he did okay
but definitely had a full time job and needed the income.

Not close to the incompetence we see in the SEC on a weekly basis.

Many make extra cash working directly w teams at practice and spring sessions.

Some have actual “real” jobs and many are retired.
