Yeah. So are we.

There is a difference between "sleeping giant" and "chronic underachiever". Jackie and early-RC were a long time ago. Tee Martin was not that much more recent.

I would compare Tennessee football to Arkansas basketball.

There isn't much talent in Arkansas but the talent that is there is as good as any other, it's just really top heavy. In the last 10 years, players from Arkansas have won the Doak Walker, Rimington, Mackey (x2) and Johnny Rogers (best return man) awards and another was a top 10 NFL draft pick at DE. That's really not too bad but once you get past that most years the rest are Sun Belt or FCS quality.

You can make a solid core from in-state but you need to be able to recruit Texas too.

At least tenn fans know their role in the conference.
Ark fans actually believe they are in the upper echelon of the sec.

IMO this is the #1 factor behind Arkansas' plummet. Joining the SEC slowly cost them the TX pipeline and then it hit a wall when the B12 was formed and more programs like KS, KSU, IA St started picking up TX HS kids and of course NU, CU and OSU increased their pull.

LSU starts clicking, BAMA gets their mojo back and suddenly Arky can't get TX kids, attract best regional kids much less protect their own borders as well.

Perhaps an Arky guy can back this up, but I think Arky and Broyles thought UT was headed to the SEC with them?

We don't.
LSU is coming down off of their greatest run in history. Texas will be back up again with Herman. No more cruits for you.

Enjoy the ride down.

When was the last time a coach used Arkansas as a stepping stone?

Texas A&M, and to a lesser extent, Missouri, joining the SEC hurt Arkansas too.

We've had a hapless idiot for a coach since they've joined so there's really no way to validate that answer.

I know the aggies think magically things changed from us winning 4 or 5 in a row to them just due to them switching conferences but I think there's a little more to it than that. IOW, I'm not a simpleton.

big F

UT has a much larger recruiting base due to their hot bed of the N.GA and NC markets. ARK has a long way to get to Dallas which would be the largest metro area South of the mason Dixon line. I guess Missouri is close but the state of Mizz doesnot produce a lot of D 1 talent.

Walmart and Tyson and Jerry Jones money can only go so far.

Other than having a much smaller stadium, I don't see many differences

All we keep hearing is how Tennessee will have its pick of a top tier coach, but shouldn't Arkansas be considered as the same tier job?

I think you could make the argument.
