In a roundabout way, Saban built the program at LSU into what it is today.
He also "rebuilt" the Bama football program.
I love Spurrier though. I hope that when he retires he takes Holtz spot on ESPN.
Or have the Golf Channel give him an oppiniated talk show. Something like the HBO Bill Maher show but with sports. That would be awesome.

@TravHaneyESPN: HBC on Saban "If he wants to be one of greatest coaches he has to go somewhere besides Bama & win, bc they’ve always won"
He kicked our arse in 2010, but those two losses to Mike Dubose in 1999 was still hurt.

Just an FYI, not really directed at you Capstone, just closest reply button but I don't think he was taking a shot at Saban, this is what he said after it.
quote:
His thoughts on who’s the best coach in the SEC.
“I think it’s Saban. He’s considered the best. Les Miles is considered one of the best, when you look at number of wins. I believe you’re as good as your record. You are whatever your record is. Don’t give me any excuses or that you can’t win at this place.

I know it was a one-liner and he likes to get in a jab. But even with inherent advantages that programs like Alabama, Texas, USC, Ohio State, etc. have, you still have to be a tremendous coach. Otherwise those programs would always be on top. But the continuation of that quote pretty much suggests he sees it that way as well. I mean, he did coach at UF afterall.

Everyone knows Saban is one of, if not the best coach in the college game today. I think this comment comes out of Spurrier's ego. He really wants to win here so bad because it has never been done before. He would love to say he was the first coach to win big here, it'll validate his own ego that he can win big anywhere. He views this challenge as harder than winning at Bama.
that's probably about right

To be fair, Florida wasn't established before Spurrier took over.

But it was always viewed as the "next big program" As early as the 1970s, Coach Bryant was telling everyone that would listen that if UF got the right coach "we'd all be chasing them".

There's a big difference between having certain advantages and actually making the jump. At best, they were third in the SEC in the 80's, and that's if you ignore all the NCAA issues they had.

Meh, it's not really a "shot", it's true. He's just speaking fact. I don't see any reason a UGA fan should get disgruntled with this.
that's why spurrier's comments are so funny...there's always just enough of the truth in them to sting.

His comments do not sting me. In fact I am pointing and laughing at him. He is the one whinning about having to potentially play UGA with all their starters.
To me Spurrier is and will always will be an butthole.

He might be talking shite about UGA but he's speaking the truth...

Spurrier is probably the biggest smartass I have ever seen and i'm pretty damn bad myself. I was the one making smartass remarks after my grandma died.
Back in '07 before we hired Saban, part of me was hoping it would be Spurrier just to hear the funny shite he'd say
