I can't comment. I've never had any of that food. But it doesn't seem like it has many recommendations

Well, I mean except for the fact Charleston and Savannah are on every other damn series on Food Network and Cooking Channel

I did make the mistake of going to Maurice's once. I couldn't believe anyone ever went there, ever. It was horrendous.

I tried a couple other places. I don't remember the names, but in both cases, a life-long Columbia native took me. In both cases, I had to pretend that the food was okay for fear of offending my buddy.

That's disgusting. What a boring BBQ culture

And yet then I hear about how people have left the state because the food is so bad. It's really conflicting

I love brisket but it is not barbecue. Furthermore, mustard based sauce is my favorite, so South Carolina wins.

Brisket is the key difference. It's what makes Texas BBQ special. Come on down and try it. If you are flying in this weekend, Pinkerton's BBQ in Houston is really on their game with the brisket these days.

You've got ribs and pulled pork. I'm sure it's delicious. It's just not fair comparison...not fair to you.

Again, brisket is brisket. Not BBQ

This is like comparing steak to lobster

You have to venture to places out in the country. I'm talking places that if you mentioned support for Hillary Clinton, they'd probably refuse to serve you.

That is where you find the best bbq.

I never get my bbq from places in Columbia.

ETA: Of course I say that, but on the flip side, equally incredible bbq can be found in the state's Black Belt where if you mentioned support for Trump, they'd probably refuse to serve you as well.

Really? Who are these people, and what was their critique about low country cooking? Didn't have enough "ancient grains" or sustainable tofu?

I love bbq brisket. But for bbq pork is king. When I think of Texas BBQ, I think of grilling in the back yard.
Memphis, St. Louis, Carolina, etc. That's real bbq.

Yeah Columbia BBQ is garbage.

If you don't drive 45 minutes to get BBQ if you aren't making your own, you're doing it wrong.

why do people always act like there's any skill involved in BBQ? Is Franklin bbq not the most well known bbq joint in TX? Don't ppl line up for hours to eat there? That dude legit just throws salt and pepper on a brisket and maintains a temperature for 12-14 hours. Exactly how much skill is involved in that?
