Something Alabama fans should seriously remember before firing DeBoer

You aren't going to upgrade. Because ironically, Alabama's history and success is now going to become it's greatest liability. I said that when Saban retired and it's even more true now.

Curt Cignetti isn't coming. Kirby Smart isn't coming. Lane Kiffin isn't coming. Will Stein isn't coming. Mario Christobal isn't coming. Dabo Swinney might come just due to being on thin ice at Clemson, but Dabo can't win big in the NIL era. Heck at this Dabo would probably be a downgrade from DeBoer.

But here's the thing, more than all of that, any head coach who goes to Alabama has to accept never being more than the third best head coach in Alabama history. Any head coach who goes to Alabama has to accept immediately that they will always be compared to Bryant and Saban. Any head coach who goes to Alabama will have to accept being told constantly "well you're good, but you aren't the Bear or Nick".

Head coaches in football have massive egos. They want to be the Bear Bryant or Nick Saban of their program. Any head coach who goes to Alabama now will never have the field named after him, never have the stadium named after him, and will always be third best.

Think about that, a head coach could come into Alabama, win 2 or 3 National Titles, and it'll be "that's nice, but Bryant and Saban won 6".

And in the NIL era, Alabama no longer has the money advantage either. Curt Cignetti at IU showed last year a head coach can now win almost anywhere that is willing to go in on football. Last year fundamentally changed college football going forward. The days of only 10 or 15 schools having a legitimate chance to win a National Title at the start of the season are over.

Coaches want to go to a program thinking they can be the best that ever coached at that program. Again, money isn't a factor, as plenty of schools now with rich alumni are willing to pay up for a good coach. At the vast majority of schools, 1 or 2 National Titles gets the stadium or field named after you, or at least a prominent statue. No coach can go to Alabama at this point and think they'll ever be looked at anything more than third best. That will become a huge liability to Alabama going forward.

I do not think that college football fans realize how few coaches have what it takes to win in the SEC. This is why you see programs like Tennessee (up until Heupel), Auburn, Texas A&M, and Florida cycle through coaches. Even a guy like Malzahn, who was a consistent 7-5/8-4/9-3 coach is hard to replace once you get rid of him.

Of course, it is probably easier to win at Alabama than Tenn/Auburn/A&M but the expectations are much higher. There is no guarantee that the next guy would be any better than DeBoer unless they got a real top guy, which, as you noted, may not even want to come lest they be hated for being a good but not great coach like DeBoer or Curry.

You could substitute any of the standards in College football in for Alabama.

Money will dictate the haves now that players can be paid above board

I think the general consensus is a major staff overhaul. I see way more fans going after Grubb than I do DeBoer.

Lane Kiffin

Can’t even beat Kentucky. Lane has his hands full right now with a more expensive roster than Bama has.

Lane Kiffin is in his first year at LSU. No one expected LSU to win the National Title in year one at LSU. Playoff appearance at best, but most predicted 8 - 4 or 9 - 3.

Kalen DeBoer is in his third year at Alabama. Alabama fans expected a National Title year one and no drop off. Kalen DeBoer has no National Titles, no SEC Titles and a humiliating loss to IU.

Lane Kiffin isn't Nick Saban, but no one is. And at least Lane has an intensity to him. DeBoer is absolutely soft and that rubs off on his team. Heck the guy looked like he was low key having a panic attack yesterday.

They aren't even remotely the same. Make no mistake, Alabama fans would trade DeBoer for Kiffin tomorrow if it was possible.

No we didn’t. We have a first year starting QB. We have other holes and we don’t have a 40 million dollar roster.

There are many of us who don't want DeBoer fired yet. We at least want to give him an opportunity to fix a problem. What we want is an OC change. Grubb has shown who he is. And that's not just at Alabama either. He is doing the exact same things that got him fired in Seattle. He is a terrible playcaller and does nothing to help his young QB. Alabama is currently following the same pattern as last season where the offense just completely stalls out for the rest of the season.

Yep. We’re not getting rid of DeBoer. There’s not a single proven coach who could even replace him anyways.

This is partially true. Bama can most definitely upgrade from DeBoer and they more than likely will. They'll never upgrade from Saban.

Too old, don't want him

Kirby Smart isn't coming.

Too old but he'd be good and most definitely an upgrade from Deboer.

Lane Kiffin isn't coming.

Lol don't want him and not many people will after his tenure in LSU is over

quote:

Will Stein isn't coming.

He'd crawl on his belly to Alabama if he had the chance to coach here.

Mario Christobal isn't coming.

Don't want that cheese dick.

He'd probably fit in well but they need to go younger.

I don’t think they need a top guy. They need to be able to attract asst coaches that are upstarts. Dabo, Kirby, Saban, all lost assistants that made a difference. DeBoer is probably a good coach, but he needs good coordinators. LSU will wear them out in 2 weeks because the coordinators have no identity.

And Frank Thomas. He had a 115-24-7 (.812) record from 1931-1946 at Alabama. His overall record was 141-33-9 (.795).

During the entirety of his tenure at Alabama, teams only averaged 6.3 points a game while facing Alabama. He never had a losing season.

Thomas was a quarterback at Notre Dame for 2 years under the tutelage of Knute Rockne, who called him the most intelligent player he had ever coached and his roommate at Notre Dame was none other than George (The Gipper) Gipp.

Thomas had four undefeated seasons, three Rose Bowls, one Sugar Bowl, one Cotton Bowl, and one Orange Bowl. One verified national championship. One shady national championship.

He won 4 SEC Championships. He was honored with the SEC Coach of The Year in 1945. Thomas brought the Knute Rockne school of coaching tactics to Alabama and taught them to one of his players, Bear Bryant, who continued that coaching tree to great success at Alabama.

So, when coaches think about coaching at Alabama, it is the shadow of Frank Thomas that frightens them and scares them away from Alabama, knowing that they will never be as good as him.

Wallace Wade, LSU's Will Wade's great-gradfather, also frightens all modern day coaches who don't want their ego bruised by becoming the coach at Alabama and having to live up to his standards. He was just as good, or even better than Thomas, but had a much shorter tenure.

It's really because of these 2 coaches that Alabama had to settle for DeBoer after Saban left. No one wants to try to follow them. It's a curse.

Alabama fans are stupid fricks who just want to take out their frustrations on whatever is available.

It's a good thing I'm already banned from the Alabama forum, because I'd get banned again within a few hours.

We have a young QB and a young OL. That's what it amounts too. We were looking to be ahead of schedule this year, but that turned out to be false.

But they can't handle it because they think Saban is the norm.

I think Alabama can hire any coach they want. As the saying goes, "Money talks."

I have no desire to see a coaching change.

Luckily our fans don’t make hiring and firing decisions.

Deboer is fine.

His buddy Grubb orchestrated the worst offensive performance (relative to the competition) I have seen in the last 20 years of Alabama football and has to go immediately.

He was also shitty against UGA.
