I think the 1 loss teams without a ranked win should be ranked in this order:
1 - Boise State (lost to #1 by 3 on the road)
2 - Indiana (lost to their one ranked opponent on the road)
3 - Texas (lost to their one ranked opponent at home)
4 - SMU (lost to a worse ranked opponent at home)
5 - Miami (lost to an unranked team, lots of close wins)
6 - Army (schedule is just too bad. Also lost at home to a ranked opponent by 35)
Where exactly they fit amongst the other teams can be debated. But on paper without considering the team's pedigree, recruiting rankings or last year' performances, that's the order I think those unproven 1-loss teams should be ranked amongst themselves.
Texas being ranked so far ahead of Indiana and Boise State is the biggest "name based" ranking this year. Worse than ND or PSU.

Some of these teams remind me of that tcu team Georgia destroyed in the championship game. Good teams who aren’t quite there and are subject to getting abused by much better teams.

bro I'd leave SMU for Florida State in five seconds
ETA: FSU has no money or what?

Not really, several 3 and 4 loss teams in the SEC would beat teams like SMU, Indiana, and ND right now on a neutral field. Hell, I’d take Arkansas over Indiana at a neutral field on Saturday.

Well, TCU had some ranked wins before playing UGA. None of those teams I listed do.
Just so Texas fans don't have a stroke... I don't actually think Boise State or Indiana is better than Texas. I do think Texas would beat those teams if they played.
But I think that while all of those teams haven't proven anything by beating anyone yet this season, Texas has done less than Boise State and Indiana.
The best reason I can come up with for thinking Texas is better comes down to "They have better recruits" and "they were really good last season". But none of that is on the field performance THIS year. The good thing about a long playoff like we have now is that it will all be proven on the field. It won't just be one game they have to put things together for... it's 3-4 games in a row. Even if one team pulls a TCU like upset in round 1, over 4 games it will all get proven out. Whoever wins the playoff will have earned it, even if we might have questioned if they belonged in the field when the playoff starts.

A billionaire and some partners are funding the SMU athletic department for the next 5 years trying to win a trophy . They already collected 100 million to make up for no ACC media rights- and that only took 7 days. They definitely won’t be outbid.

A trophy in what? Any SEC school that plays SMU in the playoffs will stream roll them. Same for the Big10 schools.

True, they would have 2 or 3 losses by now if they were in the SEC.

I think all those teams played a tougher schedule than TX. The one GA game doesn't make up for the rest of that schedule.

And yet they've never had a legit stadium in their entire history
In their heyday, they had to borrow the Cotton Bowl and then Texas Stadium
then they do this little Gerald Ford thing in 2000, it's 32K, and you would think they'd pattern it after a high luxury NFL stadium with say 60K and call it good. But it's 32K and looks like a really nice Texas high school stadium minus the luxury

it's a smidgen better than the soccer stadium in Frisco

If they had Syracuse, Miami, Clemson and Ga Tech on the schedule this year, they'd be no better than 8-3 right now

No I don't think they're a top 10 team but I understand why they are there.
I still think the SEC is going to prove some doubters wrong when the playoffs come. Of course they're going to match SEC teams up first round to try to eliminate as many as they can.

They’ve had plenty of chances to do this in the past. So far, they have even generated questionable rankings to ensure SEC teams get separated. I don’t know why that would change now.

Ford is a great place to see a game. The stadium is not going to hold SMU back in the least.
Curious, if they are successful, whether they will try to hold any "big games" in the Cotton Bowl, which would be pretty fun. Especially since they seem to be marketing themselves as the "Dallas" team.

Within the next few years SMU is going to be able to handle the mid-tier to lower tier SEC teams pretty handily.

Nevermind the fact ND literally beat 2 loss aTm at atm. Or three sec loss lsu lost to not bowl eligible usc. You gotta win the games and outside of uga thumping Clemson the sec has looked mediocre against other conferences. Even the vandy over vatech win is less an upset and more a mid tier sec beat mid tier acc by a score.

They would beat Kentucky for sure and I think they beat LSU and Florida as well. Surely any team in the top 15 can do that
Posted on 11/27/24 at 9:03 am to ManBearSharkReb
They're #13 in FEI and SP+. They lost one game early to a pretty good team and have won 6 of their 8 games since then by double digits.
Considering we can't beat Oklahoma or Vandy and you can't beat Kentucky, LSU or Florida, yea it's reasonable.
