Should the SEC stay at 8 conference games in order to preserve non-conference rivalries?

With news of the Bedlam series ending between OU and Okie State and the Texas vs. Texas Tech match-up going away, I wonder if it would be better to stay with 8 SEC conference games and keep it at 4 out-of-conference games in order to preserve some of these OOC rivalries?

As it stands, I worry for rivalries like South Carolina vs. Clemson, Florida vs. Florida State, and Georgia vs. Georgia Tech. Those rivalries make college football better.

It will be 9 games. It is what it is.

I don’t see why it has an impact. 9 conference games, an OOC rivalry (many have one already they can use, others can get one) another big OOC game and a cupcake.

Nine games with three permanent rivals means that even at 16 teams, everyone plays each other every two seasons. Makes too much sense.

With the playoff, the 12-team expansion will come the 9-game schedule. Now, the coaches know they can get in with even 2 losses.

That leaves 3 OOC games to fill. If rivalries go away with 3 picks every year, they didn't want them that bad to start with. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Honestly, I wouldnt be shocked if they ended up joining the SEC sooner than later. Geographically they make sense. Doesn't seem like the officials have a line theyre willing to stop at when it comes to expansion and those teams make sense.

I agree on 8 but that may be the canary in the coal mine at this point

SEC stays at 8 they respect the fans
SEC goes to 9 and they just respect the $$$$

Would also be an dynamic of a shift in power from East / West balance and West (The REC) openly exerting a move to a dictatorship. If it does go to 9 we may be back to a century ago where the bigger conferences fracture to more local / regional ones.

Yes, otherwise teams who nut up and play 2 P5 OOC are gonna get screwed.

The SEC could have an 11 game schedule and Florida would still play Florida State

Play 9 games. Schedule your old rivalries OOC.

It’s really interesting how the only teams that have these OOC instate rivals are SEC East Teams. Clearly Missouri and A&M could have opted to play Kansas and Texas but for whatever reason chose not to.

Knee jerk response from the B1G / PAC mantra where this is easy because the conference is easy. 9 conference games and you will see the SEC cannibalize itself and lose bowl spots which is what the B1G and PAC want.

Some SEC schools like UF and UGA are playing at least 2 P5 OOC annually now. Going to 9 games punishes them.

Here we go. Someone that’s not in the conference coming in suggesting changes. WTF gives with your fan base?

One of these is not like the other...

And this... TX can suggest changes once they win the conference.

What's your point?
Heck, we're now scheduled to play 3 P5 OOC in 2024.

That going to 9 games isn't "punishment" when your OOC rival is a cupcake - referencing GA/GA Tech here if unclear.

Georgia Tech has beaten UGA more recently than Tennessee has.
