I always thought he looked like a fine Southern gentleman.
Was the deck stacked against him recruiting and competing against the Bear?

quote:Yes, in the name of Walter Byars, head codhead of the NCAA and Bryants drinking buddy. Shug was a fine man, tough guy, and was a fine southern gentleman, complete with enjoying a mint julip on occasion

Not an old timer, but he was a badass through and through. Led charges at Normandy on D-Day

Back when coaches weren't fired on a whim. In today's age he definitely wouldn't have lasted 24 years.
Also, Jordan coached AU basketball AND football. Was a different time back then.

Maybe in the later days, but Shug won a National Title before Bear did.

Yes, screw football, anybody who was on that beach in France on 6/6/44 was a man, mic drop.

Fought in both theaters, wounded at Normandy and later he participated in the Okinawa invasion. Salute.

No. I’m not sure who it is but it’s not Bradley.

"We were indeed fortunate, Carl."
I'll always remember him by that often used remark to open his Sunday tv broadcast with Carl Stephens. They'd have beaten somebody like Chattanooga by around 50 points, and he'd use that phrase.
He was a fine, fine man and most definitely "a man's man"!

Shug was a bada$$ American who happened to end up coaching football.

A hell of a football coach. A true southern gentleman. An American hero.

Bear Bryant and Shug Jordan decide to go fishing. They row the boat out into the middle of the lake, only to find they’ve left the tackle back on the shore.
“Don’t worry, Shug,” Bear said. “I’ll just walk over and get it.”
He steps off the side of the boat, walks two steps, then sinks like a stone. Flailing in the water, he reaches for Shug, who pulls him back in the boat.
“Shug, I owe you one. But do me a favor: Don’t tell the folks back in Tuscaloosa I can’t walk on water,” Bear said.
“All right,” Shug said, “if you won’t tell the folks back in Auburn I pulled you in.”

War veteran and great coach. Most don’t realize he coached the Basketball team at Auburn also. He wasn’t Bryant but was a damn good coach and better human being.

You don't want to hear most people's thoughts on Shug Jordan if you hold him with any amount of esteem.

He was the real deal. Decorated war hero, loved his players and Auburn. Had everyone’s respect. It’s true he was from a different era. Pat Sullivan told a great story about his recruitment. He was also the men’s basketball coach and a good one at that. My dad was in school there during the NC season and loved how he represented Auburn.
