Jackson Koivun - first time ever for a golfer to win it.

I feel like it was a career award for him, but I'm good with that in his case.

eh, even though he didn't win the NCAA individual title (though Auburn won the team title), he still won 5 tournaments this year, his 3rd straight SEC individual title, and basically every single national award. then you add in he had a T11, T6, T5, T4 in PGA Tour events (also finished in the top 25 at the US open) from the end of his Sophomore season until he turned pro, his resume this year was/is pretty damn absurd

I am not sure I consider golfers athletes. I mean Arnold Palmer(when he older and playing he was very fat), John Daly, Craig Stadler, etc.
Def takes skill no doubt..but they are not athletes.

Obviously this post is going to ruffle some feathers...
But I tend to agree that in terms of traditional "athleticism" golf doesn't require as much as other sports...
But we still need to give credit for those people that are elite at sports that require high levels of hand-eye coordination. And at least golf has a strength component to it... which kind of separates it from billiards and bowling.
I see golfers as much artists as athletes.

By that logic a lot of classic baseball and football players weren't athletes either.

I think the disconnect for golf is running. Running is the oldest sport, and the bases for almost all sports. It’s like the mother sauce for sports. If you notice most sports that ppl attack as “not real” are always sports where running is absent. Golf, cheerleading, race car drivers, gymnastics, jockeys, etc.

Anyone who tries to claim a gymnast isn't an athlete needs to walk into oncoming traffic and remove themselves from the genepool.
I don't disagree with your claim, but there are degrees of this as well.
I've seen cheerleaders do things that are definitely athletic; jockeys and race card drivers, OTOH, rely on something they ride to do all the hard work.
I do agree golf is in a weird place in the "realm of sports", in that you can do it professionally a LOT longer than almost anything else that gets played on ESPN (even the aforementioned race car driver and jockey professions)

I think anyone can be a good golfer, with enough time and practice, but you gotta have some athleticism to be as good as Jackson or the top pga pros.

Professional/tournament golfers are similar to professional/tournament fishermen. Both take an elite skillset to be competitive at the top levels. But it can be argued they aren’t professional athletes, and any random person can become a recreational golfer or fisherman.
What do golf, fishing, and sex all have in common? You don’t have to be particular good at any of them to still love participating.

I very jokingly gave him a Roll Tide, he shot us a big smile and came right back with a War Eagle. We told him how proud we were to cheer for him. He's a damn good golfer.
