SEC discussing possible SEC only football playoff

The SEC Commissioner is reportedly still upset about the way the College Football Playoff expansion talks collapsed earlier this year, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN. He’s been openly vocal about his displeasure, and that’s going to guide league decision making. There’s been a general erosion of trust on the collegiate commissioner landscape since the chaotic COVID-19-addled summer of 2020.

One idea certain to be discussed by SEC officials in Destin is the notion of the SEC creating, running and profiting from its own intra-SEC postseason. The most obvious model is an eight-team one, but there are others that will be discussed.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey stressed that no seismic change is imminent. But he did mention that an SEC-only playoff, in a variety of forms, was among the nearly 40 different models that SEC officials discussed at their fall meetings.
“As we think as a conference,” he told ESPN on Monday, “it’s vitally important we think about the range of possibilities.”

How would you feel about an SEC Playoff in the post season?
I for one welcome the opportunity for UK to kill other teams' seasons after they're over

frick Sankey and his stupid arse playoff expansion. Only gives a frick about immediate payoffs and has no clue or care about the future of the sport.

Bad.
Can't imagine that would be too popular outside our region.
Not to mention killing us in the real postseason.

I dont think it will be an only SEC playoff but I could see as SECCG semi with the 4 pod winners playing and then a final in ATL but not a fully seperate playoff.

It doesn't sound viable. I believe he is throwing it out there just to get people back to the playoff expansion format discussion.

this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life

That would create a 16 game season for the team that won out.
No way that's acceptable for any program

1. Pods are a terrible idea. JUst expand to 2, 8-team divisions and keep the SECCG.
2. An all-SEC playoff is stupid. Any major change now that lessens the regular season importance is a mistake, IMO.
3. Please do NOT expand the CF playoffs.

I wonder if this is where the OSU and other big name school rumors for joining SEC were coming from? Maybe they wanted an NFL lite of college football

12 Team Playoff with mostly SEC teams
Add the conference champs of any conf that want to join
So you would have parallel post seasons Alliance / SEC that would not play each other similar to the Rose Bowl / Bowl Alliance Split from 94-97
SEC could easily give enough money to some of the small conferences to join the SEC playoff then possibly Big12, ACC

Realignment and the future of college football lies in the hands of:
1) The SEC
1A) The B1G
That's it. Nobody else matters. Those two leagues could raid the rest of the power conferences for their best programs and basically form their own college football league. I'm not saying that's going to happen, but it's also not out of the question.
Anyone outside the SEC was idiotic not to immediately vote for playoff expansion.
My guess...pods or divisions are dead.
8 games - 1 permanent rival, 7 alternating every other year
**OR**
9 games - 3 permanent rivals, 6 alternating every other year
Any idea of conferences being tied to geography, if it isn't already dead, soon will be. The old SEC is dead with Mizzou and A&M joining being only "the canary in the coal mine" for what's to come. Ohio State in the SEC...baws. Let's hear the "not southern enough" bitching now.
Edit: And Nothing Dame can go to hell.

I can see the SEC threatening to do this, because the NCAA completely betrayed them.
The problem with the 4 team playoff was that you had 5 big conferences and only 4 spots. Nightmare scenario, 5 12-0 teams, all powerhouses, and you leave one out. Bama, USC, Oklahoma, Clemson, Ohio State.
If you go to 8 or 12 (as promised), you don't need to win a conference, just be very good. Oklahoma has been making it, and then getting waxed by the SEC team due to not being ready for that level of play.
Their decision, it seems, is to move over to the SEC and get acclimated during the regular season, trusting that they would finish high enough to still get into the playoffs, and then be ready for a rematch. And it does make sense, we've seen 3 SEC-SEC matchups, all three times the SEC champ lost in the natty. Twice it was a rematch, and the early loser won both rematches.
But what SEEMS to have happened, is the NCAA conned OU into destroying the Big 12 (now it's 4 conferences for 4 spots), and in the process could destabilize the SEC (might have so much competition, that the team that emerges will have too many losses).
And I can see that being the actual intent.
I could see the SEC (and ESPN) trying to leverage things to "we're the public champs, we will play our own tourney instead", and force the issue. At some point Clemson, Fla State and Miami might all feel pressure to join the SEC, to get a shot at that playoff. Maybe even the rest of the Big 12...
you get the SEC REPLACING the NCAA, with sub-conferences inside it. Leaving the Big 10, the Pac 12 and the Northeast ACC teams (and Notre Dame) on the other side of the fence.

Sounds like a plan to me. The SEC has the best teams. Maybe it could be an SEC Big 10 playoff. The rest could do what ever they chose to do with their lesser conferences and teams.
If nothing else it would get these idiots back to the table. No way they are going to let the SEC and Big 10 do their own thing without putting up a fight.

I can't imagine how such a tournament would be seeded.
If it's the top eight teams, then the seeds from 2021 would be as follows (if the tournament was played before the SEC championship game):
1 - Georgia
2 - Alabama
3 - Ole Miss
4 - Kentucky
5 - Arkansas/Tennessee
6 - Arkansas/Tennessee
7 - Mississippi State
8 - Texas A&M
As for the Pigs, VOLS, Schtate, and Ags, this is my best guess at tiebreaker seeding. All four teams finished 4-4 in the conference. However, Arkansas beat both State and Aggie, so the Pigs should be above them. Furthermore, State beat Aggie, so they should be above them. Unfortunately, Tennessee didn't play the Pigs, Schtate, or Aggie, so I don't really know where to put them. I have to put them at either 5 or 6 because they have no losses to the other 4-4 teams).
Here's what the first round games would be:
#8 Texas A&M at #1 Georgia
#7 Mississippi State at #2 Alabama
#6 Arkansas/Tennessee at #3 Ole Miss ( )
#5 Arkansas/Tennessee at #4 Kentucky ( )
Left out:
Missouri
South Carolina
Florida (oof)
Vanderbilt
Auburn (oof)
LSU (oof)

The SEC is suggesting breaking away and doing their own thing. Before you scoff at that, consider:
You have the SEC 'Big Six'. Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee. All teams with national championships.
You have the meat of the old SWC- Texas, A&M, Arkansas. All historically strong teams with plenty of Cotton Bowls, and a few national championships in the mix.
You have Oklahoma, which integrated with those teams as part of the Big 12, has been very strong, and has a lot of championships.
On the opposite end of CFB, you will have the Rose Bowl group, the Big 10 and Pac 12. They won't willingly submit to the SEC groupings. I assume you can put Notre Dame in that mix, and the northern/"Big East" ACC teams such as Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College.
The southern ACC teams, on the other hand, are in a different spot. Clemson and Florida State have a lot of history playing SEC teams. Push comes to shove, would they really align with Ohio State and Michigan, against their SEC rivals? I can see Clemson fitting in a group with UGA, Auburn, obviously SC, etc. Fla State would be similarly at home with Fla, LSU, etc.
Same dynamic with the remainder of the Big 12. I can see the remainder of the Texas programs and Okie State siding with the SEC (which includes their traditional rivals), instead of becoming orphans in the Rose Bowl group.
