It's been explained multiple times.
They want protection from LSU should LSU be voted out.

Rule 11
There should be a prayer for it on every responsive pleading filed.

I think all they are hoping for is a federal court to rule that the can enforce their bylaws, and then hold the member institutions feet to the fire by holding the "2/3 to vote you out" bylaw over their heads so everyone stays in lockstep through this current time ok chaos in college athletics.
All I can say is be careful what you wish for if you're an SEC member institution. If you read the bylaws, the commissioner has pretty unwavering and unilateral power to do whatever he/she wants. Really the only thing that requires a vote is to change bylaws and to expel a member. The commissioner can pretty much punish punish anyone at his own discretion otherwise, and the severity of the punishment is also at his own discretion. We all voted on these bylaws once upon a time, but I don't believe anyone foresaw what college athletics would turn into or how draconian the commissioner would threaten to be to anyone who dared challenge his authority.

Four posters just told you. Because the SEC wants cover that there will be no repercussions from LSU or anyone else for kicking LSU out.

SEC cites "no firsthand evidence" of LSU wrongdoing in filing

I doubt they have anything.
The original suit was filed against the NCAA, not the SEC. Maybe Kiffin/LSU told players to sue the NCAA, but they had no way of knowing the SEC would get involved. They never had before.
Then there's the whole issue of this being 30 athletes, many being non football players. Why would Kiffin/LSU get involved with a bunch of players who aren't coming to LSU?

I think we are splitting hairs at this point. I said that I have no doubt that they are in court today because they want to be able to enforce their bylaws, one of which is they can vote any member out with 2/3 vote whenever they want, without having to go to court as a result over it, which includes LSU suing them over it (a bylaw that they agreed to btw).
I have also said that I don’t believe the SEC presidents actually intend on kick LSU out, they just want to make emphasize to every institution that it only takes 2/3 vote so everyone needs to be in lockstep with each other.

LSU has sued no one.

They won’t get cover from Congress. The warning shots have all been tweeted.

Not having firsthand information and firsthand information not existing are completely different things.
You better have a witness that can testify with this information. Anonymous sources don't count in the court of law.

Fair enough.
The conference can kick anyone out, but I can't see a world where they'll ever be fully protected from any repercussions when/if they do so.

Firsthand evidence is not required.
Lane Kiffin admitted it.
Publicly.
Bragging about it even.
They filed in your local area, despite neither of them being from the area.
They came to your school.
They practiced.
LSU held roster spots for them.
You are guilty.

He actually hasn't done that at all, even remotely.

It's not splitting hairs, it's an important distinction. And the SEC is not asking the court to rule that only LSU cannot file suit against the SEC for voting LSU out of the conference, they are asking the court to rule that "all persons acting in concert" with LSU, including the players, cannot file suit against the SEC.

For you slow retards: Just because they arent in possession of the information doesnt mean it won't come out in discovery.

I agree. Firsthand evidence is not required to eject a member.
But a responsible conference should probably have something besides news reports and Tweets.
