And this is what annoys me even more. I was a Saints and a Braves fan long before it was cool. Back when both of them were bottom dwellers. Most Bama fans are just a bunch of front running phaggots with no ties to the university. They were nowhere to be found when I was in school there.
Possibly, but did you feel the same about the sidewalk (Actually Bandwaggon) LSU fans that came out of the woodwork in 2019? It is what it is. But, you are talking more about Bandwaggon fans than Sidewalk fans. I didn't go to Georgia, but have been a Georgia fan since 1979. My daughter attended UGA in their Honors Program and Georgia got plenty of our money (although it was lessened by the Hope Scholarship)
As has been explained in the thread earlier, bandwaggon fans are the people you are talking about. Those who jump on the bandwaggon when a team is doing well, then move on to a different team when another team becomes hot.

The two most successful College Football programs of all time, makes sense.

Sorry for all the winning

This is pretty true of any dominant team historically or dominant team over a recent five to ten year period.

I haven't read through the thread but will say having lots of bandwagon, T-shirt, etc fans is a good thing. It means you're successful and are a well known brand. That's about it

I think 1980s Miami is the prototype for “bandwagon” fans.
They switched shirts until Miami made playoff last year.
However, even “bandwagon” fans are drawn to success.
I wish our sidewalk and bandwagon were full to the gills.

Congrats. You’re probably a normal person. Your fan base on the other hand isn’t. I’m guessing you didn’t participate in the annual Gump run.

Sidewalk fans are not necessarily bandwagon fans. Some of them are more passionate than the alumni.

A lot of truth to this. Although, if your parents were alumni, or you live in the jurisdiction of a public university, you get to claim fanhood without any separate qualification. No one can help, or resist, being raised as a fan. Likewise, if you live in the same jurisdiction, chances are you are supporting the school in many various ways whether you want to or not.

Never understood the point. I’m a Boston Red Sox fan and have never been to Boston.
I’m a 49s fan, never been to San Francisco.
What does it matter?
If you are a 16-17 year old, can you be a college fan without being called a sidewalker?

Texas is a big state but are there even any bandwagon / T shirt fans (these are not the same thing BTW) outside of the state?
As it turns out there are a ton of cowboys fans. But idk about longhorns.
Ohio state, Bama, notre dame are definitely ahead. People are fans of these places without even knowing what city they are in, or anything about the state they are in.
Some Florida schools could be ahead, I would say probably LSU too? LSU is a massive brand in the black community.

If you have never lived in the city you are a fan of I guess?

I guess Mexicans love Texas teams then. Cause people have said this about cowboys fans in different regions as well

When did being a fan of either of these teams become cool

More wins plus more television equals a larger non-alumni fan base.

Give me winning programs in high populations states and you will likely have the closest answer.

LSU fans: “LSU is a national brand with millions of fans nationwide!”
Also LSU fans: “Alabama should be embarrassed for being a national brand with millions of fans nationwide!”

Wait for one of the brief periods when Auburn has the stronger program. You'll notice a marked difference in the number of Alabama vs. Auburn license plates, bumper stickers, etc. It happens almost overnight.
I’m ready for Auburn to be good again in football…I’ll even take “not suck” at this point.

What if a team technically plays in a city that you have never lived in but the team name was a place you lived(Tampa Bay Rays play in St. Pete)..I lived in Tampa and Clearwater, but not St. Pete.
