Man I would love for them to have a stadium large enough to do an IB and split the tickets 50/50.

Put me on the team of "let's tear down Legion Field ".
True, it served it's purpose back in the day, but with the monies involved now and the true campus activities (tailgating, etc) of today, I couldn't care less to have a big time college football rivalry to be held in a urbanized NFL like stadium.

Legion as it exists today is a non-starter
would love get back to playing the Iron Bowl in the city is named after if they had a decent stadium...there was something magical about it....it was better than the Super Bowl.

If Birmingham actually built a legit stadium in a good part of Bham then maybe Bama and Auburn could play a game there every now and then.
No you wouldn't. A home game in Tuscaloosa (or Auburn, Baton Rogue, etc....) pumps millions into the local economy. The Iron bowl is fine in the partisan atmosphere of on campus stadiums

OP implies he remembers legion field
OP says he wants to go back

Where is a good part of Birmingham?
Posted on 11/20/16 at 8:30 pm to TouchdownTony
No. Legion Field is not in very good shape. The area it is in has become a bad area, making it scary just to find a parking place.
I get the nostalgia factor, all of that is awesome, but it just isn't practical at this point.

I don't care where you guys play the Iron Bowl, but....... I'm a Hoover resident and UAB Alum, so here's some new info for everyone.
Regarding Legion Field, a vote just passed and we may be getting that new stadium.
LINK
They are in the process of completely changing the I65/I20/59 junction, which was planned with stadium access in mind..
You guys are gonna think I'm nuts, but there are talks that ESPN Gameday could be there for UAB season opener, considering the program got reinstated after the Gumps shut it down. If you haven't seen UAB in the last few yrs, take a look at it. They are NOT afraid to go around the f'd up Alabama school system to spend some money.

Well, that's not all true. Auburn recently played a really nice bowl game there.

For the sake of the image of the state it is a good thing it is played on campus. Legion Field is in a dumpster fire of a neighborhood. It is also a shitty arse stadium. It is bad enough they have a bowl game there.

They hold some purse strings, but not those of BJCC (Bham Jefferson civic center), nor of the UAB Athletic Foundation..
UAB is huge. It is actually the largest employer in the state. They have actually gotten behind the football team, which is good for the city and the state. No they won't be a powerhouse, no they won't be in the SEC. We just want our football team and something to unite a campus and a city. That's all.

You have a team in Tuscaloosa. They seem to be doing OK. Why does the University of Alabama system need another one?

It was never 50/50. Take it from me. As an Auburn fan going to those 80's Iron Bowls, it wasn't a 50/50 crowd. Thank God Dye got it moved.

I never understand all the negative comments about Birmingham. I assume most people from Alabama that make harsh comments just like to complain. Birmingham is going through a resurgence and I'm continuously reading positive things in business magazines about it. I moved away from Birmingham 33 years ago when I left for college. My job opportunities took me to Texas, so I haven't lived there since. When I was in High School in the early 1980's I went to games at Legion Field often. Yes Legion Field was a low income neighborhood, but I never had any bad experiences. The people there were trying to make extra money from letting you park in their yards just like they do in Tuscaloosa or near in other stadium. They were always friendly, they just happen to be low income and black. The last game I went to there was an Alabama - Auburn game. I had my hatch back car packed up with a bunch of stuff I was moving out of town. I parked it in some guy's back yard. No issues, all my stuff was there when I was ready to leave.

I see the appeal for nostalgic reasons, but even as a kid I preferred going to a campus. As others have said, Legion Field is a crappy stadium in a bad part of town.
If Birmingham had a better stadium I could see maybe doing one there every now and then as a nod to history, but I would not to lose the game in auburn every other year.
