He was the true heir to Bryant as a football coach - he just ended up being it across the state

My condolences to the Auburn family. Always hurts to lose one of your legends. Pat Dye is part of what makes the SEC so great.

He was a Georgia legend too.

Won the SEC in '59 and is why we beat Tech in '60.

As a 30 year old, I never got to see him at work or critique it, but considering where Auburn was before and after, it’s undeniable he was the one who put Auburn on the map. Much appreciation.

RIP

I have hinted at it over the years, but due to respect for him, I never discussed details. Pat Dye had a system in place where he took care of kids that were in the most need. Not every player received money and it wasn't used for recruiting. It allowing kids to be college students. who the NCAA turned their back on. It was a system he brought to AU from his Bama days with Bryant. Eric Ramsey, his wife and Donald Watkins sold him out for different reasons. But Dye loved his players and the above example is why they loved him.

As a young Bama fan in the 70s and 80s I “hated” him and Auburn. But not really. It was youthful rivalry trash talking. I learned to love and respect him the more I matured, the more I knew about him and that Coach Bryant loved him. If Bear Bryant loved him like a son, that’s good enough for me. When I lived in Decatur AL, I used to listen to him talk football for 2 hours a week on Wes Neighbors’ radio show. He could recall specific play calls, game situations, players and scores from 45-50 years ago. Some of his best stories were from when he was at East Carolina. Fascinating. The man knew more about Bryant and Bama football history than most Bama fans. One of the few true legends of the SEC. RIP, coach.

TY SOG for your class and for your post. RIP Coach. I will truly miss hearing him talk Auburn and the love you could feel he had in his heart. War Damn Eagle, Coach.
