Gruden previously told school administrators that Tennessee is one of only three college jobs he'd ever take, according to a source. He's indicated real interest when Tennessee has reached out in the past but couldn't walk away from the lucrative deal he has with ESPN. Gruden is reportedly making at least $6.5 million annually for a job that requires considerably less work than what it'd take to get Tennessee back on top.

It's a good bet that Tennessee will again at least gauge Gruden's interest in the job. However, even if Gruden says he's interested, expect Tennessee to do real due diligence on how he plans to be successful at the college level given he's never recruited before. While fans may view Gruden as a program savior, the 54-year old ESPN analyst is not seen that way internally or around college football circles. Gruden's name alone doesn't guarantee success; he'd need a strong staff to help him navigate unfamiliar waters in the highly competitive world of SEC recruiting.

Beyond the recruiting questions, he hasn't coached a game since 2008 and last worked at the college level in 1989. It's why Gruden to Tennessee really isn't analogous to Alabama hiring Nick Saban away from the Miami Dolphins despite the comparisons. Saban had already won a national championship at LSU before returning to the college level at Alabama.

Why would you want a coach who doesn't want to do a job that is "more" work?

They want a big name and someone who will win the press conference , not really thinking about the job that needs to be done on and OFF the field ..“recruiting “.

Why would he leave a cushy ESPN job to coach? Besides, why do people think he would even be a good college coach? The guy has never been on a recruiting visit.

"Gruden won't be able to recruit".

LITERALLY the stupidest argument against Gruden there is, yet you dumb fricks repeat it, over and over and over and over and over.

I'd throw half this board off the edge of a cliff like the Ancient Spartans did with their retarded children. Jesus Harold Christ

I know Gruden won a Super Bowl but wasn't he kind of a .500 coach in the NFL for the most part? Is he this touted great coach that fans hope he would be?

.550, which is way above average over an NFL career

ESPN has been laying off folks in droves over the past 12 months.
Being one of the highest paid personalities on the network, I'd be looking over my shoulder.

You forgot "can't coach young players, it was his weakness in the NFL".

Come on Goulet, empty the chamber.

I don't understand the "Gruden thing" or why anybody would want him as their college head coach. Talk about an expensive waste of money.

Hiring from the Johnny Majors coaching tree tends to work well for us.

Did any of those Johnny Majors hiring decisions have an 8 year gap in their resume as a coach before you hired them?

Bill Parcells and other great NFL coaches have something like an .800 winning percentage, right?
