White people said that word everywhere in the South, especially the rural South. It probably took 10 years or more after the Civil Rights movement to get them to stop saying in front of Blacks and it probably took another ten to stop saying it in front of each other when Blacks weren't around. I'm 51 and in white company, if anyone said that word no one blinked an eye when I was growing up in the eighties.
I grew up in north Louisiana, hell I got whipped in front of two classrooms when I was in 3rd grade (89 or so) for calling one of my black, female class mates the N word (learned behavior from older relatives—-part of the times). I deserved the punishment and didn’t call any of my classmates that word again haha.
But Reggie has always been a big mouth and Bryant isn’t around to defend himself. It’s an easy jab at the Bear. Just doesn’t make since to even bring it up unless RJ is looking for sympathy points.

Yeah, to quote Randy Newman, they don't know their arse from a hole in the ground. They love the governor and if you think you're better than him you're wrong. Yeah, he went up to New York talking to some smart arse New York Jew.

I already speculated on what I think might have actually happened here...
But I also must point out that the exact same year this happened... five Black players tried out in spring practice for the Alabama squad... Dock Rone being the one people remember.
It would be interesting to hear Dock comment on Bear Bryant in this regard.
Finally, the other reason I defend Bryant regarding these matters is that he was having to deal with the virulent racism in Alabama at the time. From George Wallace on down to the guy in the streets. He didn't have to let those guys try out. And it made no sense given that Bama had just had an incredible six year run with an all White team.
When he DID integrate circa 1970... Bama immediately got good and had as good a program as was out there in the 1970s. I don't think a racist who was casually throwing around the N word would have been able to do that.

WOW, this old proverb "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" comes to mind.

Hmmm… you could have just said “I’ve never met a real racist” and saved yourself time.

As a baseball fan, I've always admired Reggie Jackson's accomplishments on the diamond.
But it seemed like he was trying to make himself relevant with everything he said around the Rickwood Field game. Mr. October is now overshadowed in Yankee lore by Mr. November (Jeter). The A's have had a lot of great players since Reggie, and now the A's are leaving Oakland. I mean shite, Dale Murphy was more recent than Reggie Jackson and good luck finding a Braves fan under 45 who can actually tell you about seeing Dale play for the Braves.
Maybe I've missed it, but is there an interview before last week where Reggie was as forward about the racism he faced in the South particularly? I know he was reluctant to break the color barrier for Alabama and Georgia football, and that is completely understandable. I highly doubt that Bryant - when recruiting the guy who would break the color barrier for Alabama - would use those words, unless he was being brutally honest to Jackson about what he would hear from other people if he were to play for Alabama.

I’m sure in the 60s you would’ve been the revolutionary we all needed to trailblaze all of them into enlightenment.
Democrats, everyone.

I'm shocked a man like Reggie Jackson is looking for attention.

shite, that was the vernacular in Alabama and Georgia in the late 80s. Different time back then.

Bear Bryant didn’t say that to Reggie Jackson. DO NOT BELIEVE.

It was a different time. Blacks worship LBJ despite him saying what he said.

I’m not joking. Find one quote where Bear was said to have said that in public. I’m sure he used the N word in private, but there’s almost zero chance he said that to Reggie Jackson.
but the comment was said in private...
It was the south in the late 60's..early 70's. I dont see why it was hard to imagine an old white man with status saying the word to a black athlete. I didnt hear the interview but OP made it seem like Jackson was cool with him and understood his tone/meaning...but I can't see how it is shocking to think he used the word
