I think if either UNC or NC State came to the SEC their football teams would instantly see an improvement. North Carolina produces good football players, their teams just never seem to be as good as they should be.

The SEC's plan is based on giving people something they want to see. The B1G's plan is based on getting cable providers to sneak charges into cable packages for something most of the viewers aren't going to care to watch. I like our model better.

I too think that the SEC will get the most TV money in ten years but not because of ratings, or footprint or any of that. I think ESPN- who is battling Fox for control of college football- will be willing to pay the SEC (via the SEC Network or whatever) whatever it takes to keep the SEC happy.

The best leverage the SEC has is to tell ESPN "Either make us the highest paid league, or when our contract is up we are going to Fox like the B1G." ESPN can't afford to let its biggest competitor get the best college football property out there. I don't care how much smarter the B1G was in all of this, ESPN is going to subsidize our stupidity to keep us happy.

So despite our crappy TV deal (and it was crappy and short sighted), and whatever scheme the B1G has, we will make the most because the most expensive thing for ESPN would be to lose control of college ball. Then all their bowl games, and channels like ESPN U, are worth a fraction of what they are worth today. Rights for the Big 12 and ACC aren't enough to float the whole boat.

I'm just of the humble opinion that our conference doesn't need to expand beyond 14 teams regardless of what other conferences do or don't do. Damn man 14 is enough teams. Do y'all really wanna expand more?

if the b1g is trying to poach southern schools, than the SEC has to react. its not a case of something you shortsightedly want. its about not letting the b1g expand its blueprint into the south

Could you imagine Kentucky, Florida, UNC and duke in the same conference basketball wise? Holy shite!

I gotta strongly disagree man. If the B1G was trying to poach charter members like Kentucky or Vandy, then i'd object but idgaf if they take southern schools out of the conference. We are strong at 14 member regardless of what they do. We will still make our money regardless. This isn't an arms race imho as you appear to think it is.

There's really no way for the SEC to stop the Big 10 from expanding into the South... or at least no way that makes sense for our own financial interests.

There are at least three schools from North Carolina that either the SEC or Big 10 could add to enter the NC market. Obviously NC is the best option for either conference but NC State is also viable (and would improve IMO if it entered as a SEC member). Duke is arguably the #1 basketball school in the country (in terms of recent success and national interest) and generates more money on football than I really thought they could given their generally terrible product and small stadium.

Virginia has two major schools that the Big 10 and SEC should have interest in and Georgia has a major school in Georgia Tech that makes sense for the Big 10 to invite but not for the SEC (When we're already in Georgia and have programs in all the surrounding states)

I misspoke. I mean that we cant let the b1g enter the Virginia and NC market without us doing the same. Im 100000% for the sec sitting where its at right now, as long as the b1g doesnt try to expand. If the b1g starts to expand. Id be ok with VT and NC or NC and duke

For whatever it's worth:

@insidemdsports: "The #SEC also remains a viable option for #UNC. Legit mutual interest, per multiple sources. Heels a crown jewel of the realignment picture."

I think UNC is on the right path as long as they hold onto Fedora.

I don't know about adding anymore schools, but can we at least exchange Mizzou for FSU?

If you are going to exchange programs for others, at least go for one in a new TV footprint. What if FSU starts sucking again? What did the SEC gain?

When you speculate about those North Carolina TV sets and markets, don't forget:

1. UNC's board controls NC State's board. Don't be surprised if the board members are more loyal to the politics that appointed them than they are to a rivalry with Duke.

2. Duke is a surprisingly small factor in North Carolina media, even in its hometown. It may be a national brand, but cable/satellite providers only get the premium rate for carrying B1G's network within its footprint and Duke is just not important enough to spread the premium rate past the state line. Duke adds no value to an SEC network (beyond what UNC already brings).

conclusion: don't count on the SEC or UNC pulling Duke into the SEC.

I just threw FSU out there because they wouldn't hesitate to jump. I would be good with swapping them out with UNC, UVA, VT, or maybe even Duke out of the new tv markets. Heck, I'd even consider swapping them out with Clemson, GT, or even Miami out of existing markets.

The Big Ten isn't going to invite Virginia Tech or NC State because they don't fit the academic profile. Apparently, they also aren't interested in Duke (despite the stellar academics). Therefore, if the SEC landed UVA and UNC, the Big Ten would be effectively blocked from expanding in the south, unless they were willing to take Georgia Tech as an isolated outlier, or bend their criteria to admit a school that heretofore wouldn't have made the cut.

That's why I'm not in favor of expanding unless it involves UNC. I think the SEC could live with the Big Ten in Virginia, but if they get UNC, then they can get all the way down to Atlanta with a real presence in the southeast. I doubt that adding NC State and Va. Tech as a response to UNC and UVA going to the Big Ten would have enough upside to overcome the political turmoil the would come with 16 members (there is no way to have 16 teams and preserve all the football rivalries while playing an 8 game schedule, and it's probably not possible at 9 games, although you could come close).
