Good to have a Tar Heel in the thread. My read on the ACC politics is that UNC and UVA are the major powerbrokers of the conference. Few questions if you don't mind:

(a) Is that right?
(b) If so, are UNC and UVA more rivalrous or collusive? (Trying to get a feel on whether they'd move to the same conference, whether B1G or SEC)
(c) Would UVA make the first move to kill the ACC?

A - I would say traditionally it's been UNC, UVa, and dook as the big power brokers, but FSU and Clemson have a great deal of sway of late given the league's seemingly "weak" standing. However, it seems most other ACC schools (particularly NCSt administrators and fans) seem to believe that the ACC/UNC have a Texas/Big12 relationship.....

B - Probably both, though the rise of Va Tech has cooled the UNC/UVa rivalry, it is still pretty intense for older fans of each. The football series is actually called "The South's Oldest Rivalry" though I'm sure Auburn/UGa fans would have something to say about that.

C - Yes. If it came to pass, I don't think UNC would want to publicly appear to make the move to kill the ACC. I think if UNC, FSU, UVa, or GT were to make a move elsewhere, it would lead to the eventual collapse of the conference. Of course, other schools would have options, but it seems like those 4 either have open invites to join other conferences (UNC/UVA/GT) or appear motivated to look at other options (FSU).
have seen a lot of talk about UNC and dook being tied at the hip...this idea has been WAY overblown, IMO...while they do work closely and tend to vote together in ACC matters, UNC will not tie themselves to the sinking blue devil ship during expansion...it wouldn't be difficult to schedule them OOC in basketball like UK/UL do

the underrated "partner" that would be key to moving UNC (and who UNC is supposedly working with behind closed doors) is UVa...the rumors on UNC boards are that UNC/UVa have reached out to B1G/SEC as landing spots should the ACC fall...apparently UVa prefers the B1G over the SEC, and the opposite is true for UNC (although not in the landslide that is felt amongst donors/fanbase)...this is why Delany is pushing hard for UVa to try to get Carolina to move, and for this reason (along with the academic angle) I could see UNC making the massive mistake of moving to the B1G

but this is all a moot point as long as the ACC doesn't lose any more significant members...UNC will not make the first move to kill the ACC...I think there is hope that the SEC would be the choice now that there's an AD and chancellor that were recently hired outside of the UNC system....it sure seems that Bubba Cunningham prefers the SEC over other options...it would be a slap in the face to what Mike Fox has done with the baseball program over the last decade to kill that program by relegating them to the B1G
quote:

The fact that they have asked the B1G commissioner and the president of the AAU to be on this panel to discuss the role of athletics at UNC has me a little concerned that the B1G might have the inside track on getting UNC.

Delany is also on the GAA board of directors at UNC

For whatever it's worth:

@insidemdsports: "The #SEC also remains a viable option for #UNC. Legit mutual interest, per multiple sources. Heels a crown jewel of the realignment picture."

You may have already stated, but which would you prefer--SEC, B1G, or stay in the ACC?

All things equal, would probably rather stay in the ACC. I personally think the rush to super conferences will lead to a bubble that bursts, eventually.

But should things continue to deteriorate as they seem to be on the verge of, SEC all day every day over the B1G. Personally I'm not a fan of this era of expansion, but definitely don't want UNC to be left behind.

Would love for Carolina to be in the SEC east with trips every other year here in Nashville, Knoxville, Athens, etc. In football, I think it would increase our ability to keep SEC schools from poaching NC more than it would help current SEC members. Hopefully that would help get the program back to where it was when Mack was in Chapel Hill....
quote:

If UNC wants SEC, we take them with either VaTech or Duke (preferably VaTech, but Duke if necessary). If UNC wants Big10, then we take NCState and VaTech.

It's as simple as that. Ball is in UNC's court to decide what they want: Big10 or SEC. Once they decide, all the rest of the dominos will fall into place.

My guess is UNC will go with the Big10 (along with UVA). SEC will add NcState + VaTech. Big10 happy, SEC - albeit not our first choice - happy.

Big winners in all of this (in order): Big10, SEC, Big12..... Big Losers: ACC huge loser, Pac12 smaller loser, but falls behind the other 3 major conferences

All comes down to the Maryland/ACC lawsuit....I tend to think it Swofford somehow makes the $50 million stick, the ACC survives.

If not, it probably doesn't take long for UVA (and maybe GT) to bolt to the B1G. Then FSU and Clemson to the Big 12. At that point, UNC probably has an "exploding offer" from both the SEC and B1G it will have to act on. The SEC probably would take either VT or dook along with UNC, but if we balk, they probably move to NCSt and VT....
quote:

I think UNC would be more likely to come to the SEC if the proposed 16th team was Duke rather than Virginia Tech. Think of that 16th slot as bait to attract the Tar Heels rather than a ball and chain situation. You may be right that UVA would actually be the best partner, but I'm sensing that UVA feels like they never would be able to compete in the SEC, but might in the Big Ten. I could be wrong about that, but it is the impression I'm getting.

Agree in the comparison of dook/VT.....I do think that the SEC going after UVa entices both UNC as well as moving into new markets (which seems to be the SEC's chief goal in expansion).

That said, I think UVa is more interested in the B1G, but for the academics angle moreso than from a competitive standpoint.

quote:

Jim Delaney is a Tar Heel. Mike Slive is a UVA grad. I don't think either will factor in the decision, but it is an interesting aspect.

big difference in UNC and UVA alumni relationships and how they may sway decisions such as these, IMO....UNC is a much tigher-knit group overall
A couple of things:

1 - Not sure where the idea of UNC/dook being "tied" together got started, but it is WAY overblown. The more relevant school in regards to getting UNC is Virginia, and Delany knows this. If Slive wanted to outmaneuver Delany, he'd push hard for both UVa and UNC. I suspect he's already done this, and UVa prefers the B1G over the SEC.

2 - If the ACC were to collapse, going to the B1G would be a disastrous move for UNC (for several reasons). Having lived in NC, SEC country, and B1G country, there would be a massive cultural identity that would be given up.

3 - UNC fans overwhelming support going to the SEC over the B1G (beyond the football/basketball stuff, would make a great baseball league even better instead of sacrificing an elite program in the B1G).

4 - Sadly, I think if a move happens, UNC will end up joining the B1G. It sounds like the athletics folks are pushing hard for the SEC, but the PTB are set on steering this ship north.

One underreported aspect of this whole saga is right here. Notice a name on this page??? LINK

ESPN showed replay late last night and said officials clearly blew the call. Blue was hit by a NC player before the ball went 10 yards, which is a penalty.

the player crossed into the 10 yard area, which made him fair game.....otherwise, coaches would just send a player out to get hit in the 10 yard area before every onside kick, take the penalty, and squash the onside attempt

I know that LSU hit the ball first, but is the recover team allowed to hit a player before 10 yards before somebody touches the ball?

LSU didn't hit the ball first. Our player got hit before the ball got to him. That's kick catch interference.

My understanding is that if the players makes a move towards the ball (like the LSU player did last night), they're fair game.

The Heel closest to Brown in the Freak quotient is strongside 'backer Bruce Carter, who made four consecutive blocked punts last season

Wow ...was the punter alive?

that was in 2008......he blocked the last 3 punts of the UConn game, and the first FG in the Miami game
the guy replacing Austin is Quinton Coples, who would have been the starting DE.....he was a 4 star recruit back in the day, and is a beast

I'm hoping that LSU has been cleared to run a competent offense.

I know I have been cleared to drink heavily in preparation for this game.

and if that doesn't work a simple google of Quan Sturdivant arrest will pull up plenty of articles about his arrest on July 12 LINK ]

"...supposed to be suspended for the first half."

No. That was never the deal.

5. Zach Brown, North Carolina, LB: There could've been a couple of Tar Heels on this list, as Butch Davis has infused a ton of athleticism into this program. Brown, a 6-2, 220-pound sophomore, has really blossomed in his first full season at UNC, having won the starting weakside linebacker job this spring. He'll be part of what is arguably the fastest linebacking trio in the country. According to UNC strength coach Jeff Connors, all three can run the 40 in less than 4.5 seconds. The Heel closest to Brown in the Freak quotient is strongside 'backer Bruce Carter, who made four consecutive blocked punts last season. (Carter set the UNC linebacker record with a 40½-inch vertical jump. He also clocked a 4.45 forty.)

from your link brah

that says Carter "brah".....read the next paragraph and it says Brown was clocked a couple of times under 4.30

"But I'm going with Brown, a former stud prep wrestler who went 29-0 with 17 pins and also ran for more than 1,500 yards as a high school senior. The first time Brown ran the 40 at UNC, Connors did a triple take at his stopwatch. It read 4.28. "I was shocked by that time," Connors says. So the veteran coach had Brown run it again, and that time he had four other guys use stopwatches to clock it. Same thing. 4.28 on four of the five watches. The other guy had Brown clocked in the low 4.30s. Connors pointed out that the team was tested running on a faster Mondo track surface, which he estimated might be worth five-hundredths of a second to one-tenth of a second. Regardless, Brown is still blazing-fast. He's also pretty strong, having upped his bench press from 315 to 380 this year. "He hasn't even scratched the surface," Connors says. "

Wasn't Quan Sturdivant arrested for marajuana possession a couple of months ago and supposed to be suspended for the first half?

No.
