Upvote for too many.

Downvote for not enough or just right.

Let me know what you think.

I think it's too many personally. I wanted 6 or 8 personally, I don't think there's enough parity in team strength on a given year for more than 6-8 teams to be good enough to win a title. On any given year there's 2-3 national championship quality teams, 2-3 teams that on a good day are good enough to to beat the national championship teams, and them another 2-3 teams that if all the stars align are capable of winning.

Let's look at 2022, top 4 was UGA, UM, OSU and TCU. UGA, OSU, and UM were all national championship caliber teams. TCU was a team that on a good enough day with enough things going their way was able to knock off UM, but when nothing went their way got annhilated by UGA. Then we look at our next 2 (#5 & #6) in the rankings and see Bama and Tenn as the next 2. Both of which I think were significantly better than TCU but were knocked out of the running for a playoff due to insanely difficult schedules and a fluke game (looking at you south carolina, i still have no idea how spencer rattler turned into Patrick Mahomes for 1 game). But both of those teams had a reasonably shot of winning a title in a 2-3 game playoff setting. Once we move past #6 we run out of teams that have any real chance of winning 3 games against the best teams in the country.

So for that reason I think 6-8 would have been the perfect number.

With three or four leagues, you can dam bet the sec won’t agree to 12 if we don’t get 4 or more in the playoff.

But that doesn’t validate a conference championship so much and we become college basketball if we don’t put much weight on the conf champ game.

I think it's just about perfect. From now on, 8 teams will get to answer that "what if" question.

I know that question has been killing a lot of fans on this board.

I'm fine with it. We either need to go to 12 or go back to 2. The current system is a sham.

Eight wins and conference champions only would be better. Imagine fans of a 8-4 team that didn't even make their conference championship game howling because the 9-3 team they beat by 40 points loses the CC game but still makes the playoff?

Perfect. First 2 rounds should be on campus at the higher seeded home stadiums.

Top 4 teams should get byes.

The question that will determine any movement up or down or stay the same on number of teams in the playoffs boils down simply to this: Will people watch?

Yep, that's why it goes to 16 (and for my money, higher seed at home in first-round and quarterfinals).

132 team single elimination playoff ,seeded off previous years results, starting week 1. No preseason cupcakes. You lose, your season is over.

Mike Leach once said: “why would anyone be against more football”
I agree. I’ll take a couple more weeks of the best teams every year squaring off.

It will result in a lot more participation trophies which is honestly what a lot of schools want - not a real chance of winning but "hey we made the playoffs" which is why it will be popular. It's hard as hell in the SEC to get to the end without significant injuries and now winning it all will require one or more extra games. If you really think the 12th team in has a chance to win then I have some real estate to sell you. History says you can't even find 4 legitimate contenders, much less 12. On the other hand it probably means my team will be in every year so I'll shut up now.

You can't even find 4 teams worthy.

One thing is for sure, the Playoff committee will not be automatically rewarding the 5 conference champions

Bama was certainly trying its best to get a participation trophy last year…

I like 12 in the hopes it allows one year great teams from schools that don’t have the “championship” cache to get their shot to prove something.

I don’t think we fully realize how much of the BCS and 4 team playoff came down to inherent bias. That led to the same small group of teams over and over again which isn’t good for CFB. If the transfer portal, NIL and the legal buying of recruits, and an expanded playoff even out the top echelon of the CFB world, it will be a more entertaining landscape to follow.

It doesn’t have to be ridiculous parity like NFL, but at the same time the status quo just won’t be sustainable.
