Here's how I would surmise the programs of college football to fall based on how big of a job it is to be the Head Coach.... basically how desirable the job is perceived to be. Obviously some jobs are more attractive to some than others based on intangibles, etc. But this is how I would guess it would fall among the general consensus of potential coaches:

1. Alabama
A winning history. Rich recruiting territory. An obvious commitment from everyone to win.

2. Ohio State
Basically the Alabama of the Big 10.

3. Florida
Florida gets the slight nod ahead of Georgia because the state is so massive and talent-rich, and with FSU and Miami both struggling relative to the past, being the lone SEC team in the state really makes it a pretty easy gig.

4. Georgia
A very talent-rich state and no major in-state competition

5. Texas
It used to be #1 back in the early 2000s. Talent-rich state. Loads of money. Great city. Less competitive than the SEC. But with A&M joining the SEC and Texas struggling in recent years, its not as attractive as it used to be.

6. Clemson
It used to not even be Top 20. But their facilities are now top notch. They basically have the ACC to themselves.

7. LSU
No in-state competition and a very talent-rich state. Great facilities. The one negative is sharing a division with Alabama, Auburn, and Texas A&M

8. Oklahoma
The Oklahoma job would be a bit more desirable if there was more in-state talent, but having to rely on recruiting so many kids from Texas and other regions of the country make it a bit less desirable than what this job should be.

9. Texas A&M
A&M has moved from a Top 15 or 20 job up into the Top 10 because of the seemingly newfound commitment from boosters to invest in facilities. Being in the SEC also helps. A&M is a National Championship away from being a Top 5 job.

10. Auburn
Auburn's negative is having to compete in the same state as Alabama. However there has always been a commitment to win from the boosters and its location is perfect being so close to Atlanta.

11. Notre Dame
Notre Dame was the top job for many decades, but as the top-end high school talent shifted South during the '80s, '90s, and 2000s, Notre Dame became a lot more difficult of a job. Recruiting kids out of Florida, Georgia, and Texas to leave the warm South and play in South Bend is not exactly easy.

12. Michigan
Similar to Notre Dame above. The biggest hurdle for Michigan is they've not really been a true contender for a Championship in over 20 years. At least Notre Dame has been a contender 3 times in the last decade which keeps the Irish job a bit more desirable.

13. Penn State
Same difficulties as above in having to recruit kids from the South to play up north. Not being a contender in quite awhile also complicates things.

14. Oregon
Oregon is only in the Top 20 because of their top tier facilities and the financial backing of Phil Knight. But their facilities make it the premiere job on the West Coast

15. Wisconsin
Wisconsin is attractive because their division is so easy to win. Wisconsin is not nearly as big of a job as the other Big 10 schools, but being in such an easy division does close the gap a bit.

16. Florida State
Once a top 10 job... maybe even Top 5... their issues since Jimbo left the program in shambles has made this job not very desirable. It's just a giant mess and any coach that comes in has to repair the damage. Florida being in the SEC and Clemson now taking charge of the ACC makes this a much more difficult job than it used to be.

17. USC
Once the premiere West Coast job, it has fallen away a bit. Partly because the PAC 12 is just a non-factor nowadays. Their lack of an on-campus stadium and the age of the Colosseum makes it hard as well.

18. Washington
Washington is in such a great location. It doesn't have the prestige of USC or the facilities of Oregon, but being in beautiful Seattle is a real asset. That and the fact that they had a National Title in the '90s shows winning there can be done.

19. Tennessee
Once a Top 10 job, its hard to sell UT as an easy place to win when so many have tried and failed in the past 15 years. Per capita, Tennessee has the worst in-state talent in the Deep South, and what little talent is there is mostly concentrated in Memphis which is just as close to Dallas as it is to Knoxville.

20. Ole Miss
Ole Miss at least has the Grove and some charm that makes it easier to recruit than some of the other more boring mid-level SEC programs. Being in the SEC West is a negative in terms of competition, but at some point it also becomes a positive. A lot of coaches desire to coach where the action is and there is, and coaching in the SEC West is just a big deal even if its not one of the Big 4 programs.

21. Miami
The history and tradition of the U does help recruit a certain type of athlete. Miami continues to put more kids into the NFL than their on-field success would predict them to.

22. Virginia Tech
Once you go north of the Carolina's, there's not many scenes as impressive as Blacksburg. They have fan support that other Central and North Atlantic programs just don't have.

23. North Carolina
North Carolina should be a bigger job than it is. They have loads of potential but it seems they lack the true commitment to win. They could have been Clemson... a sleeping giant of the Carolina's, but Clemson got there first because their boosters decided it was time to commit and spend the money.

24. UCLA
Another sleeping giant. It should be easy to recruit kids to play in beautiful Westwood, but they just haven't ever tried to seize on that potential. Maybe one day.

25. South Carolina
Being in the SEC helps. Competing in-state with Clemson now does not. A lack of an on-campus stadium also IMO stifles any shot at moving up the ladder.

The Next Best:

26. Michigan State
27. Nebraska
28. Mississippi State
28. TCU
29. Missouri
30. Arkansas
31. Oklahoma State
32. NC State
33. Kentucky
34. Louisville
35. Stanford

Alabama is College Football. They own College Football.

As long as Saban is there, they will be in the playoffs every year.

Bump Texas down a bit. Way too much meddling by the higher ups. Also they are somewhat overrated historically

You are pretty spot on. SEC money means something. 13 of the 14 SEC schools are top 25 jobs just based on that. OM has the ability to recruit better than State and Arkansas here recently. Freeze showed you could win here. That’s why Kiffin is at OM and not Arkansas.

Texas: appears that their influential boosters cause problems with their coaching staff having full control.

I get that they've pretty much owned us lately but we recruit better and I feel like our fan support and facilities are much better than Missouri. Guess it just depends on if we're talking current state of the programs or overall job.

I mean, Petrino showed you can win at Arkansas too. Outside of the Freeze years when Ole Miss was skirting the rules in recruiting we recruit pretty similarly.

I’d move Florida down slightly due to a slightly less committed administration than some of their peers, but that’s nit-picking.

Also for Notre Dame they use to have a huge advantage bc they were always on tv, but now that really isn't a barrier for any program that's successful.

The gap between Ole Miss and MSU/MIZZ/Arkansas is smaller than that

Not trolling - but I would switch USC and Auburn. USC is the only California program with perennial top 10 potential

You can hate Austin if you want, but based on people movement, Austin is obviously a very popular city.

Fastest Growing Metropolitan Areas Since 2010 (% Growth) with a Power 5 Program:

1. Austin (Texas)- 29.8%
2. Raleigh (NC State)- 23.0%
3. Fayetteville (Arkansas)- 21.5%
4. Dallas (TCU)- 18.9%
5. Phoenix (Arizona St.)- 18.0%
6. Nashville (Vanderbilt)- 17.5%
7. Auburn (Auburn)- 17.3%
8. College Station (Texas A&M)- 15.8%
9. Seattle (Washington)- 15.7%
10. Durham (Duke/UNC)- 14.2%

USC is way too low. Should be top 5. Yes the stadium is a dump, but it’s the most fertile recruiting ground in the country. That in addition to a substantially weaker conference as compared to other P5 schools make it a highly desirable job.

100% agree with you but after seeing this, it makes the placement of Arkansas seem off

I don't care how much better their facilities are. Oregon and Wisconsin are not better jobs than USC.
