I still do...but just go to 11 game season and have more bye weeks

ESPN/ABC have pushed for as much as they can squeeze out of the SEC.

We're not going back to 11 games, but we shouldn't have to self destruct in the process by adding another conference game.

And you would be wrong. 10-2 Texas is in the playoffs with the exact same season by switching osu loss for and P4 cupcake win period. Texas went 3-2 against the top 15 teams most wins since 09 lsu. Would have head to head over OU and Vandy either way same 10-2 record.

While over half the playoff teams played cupcakes Texas OOc loss was an unnecessary contributing factor period

This! I want to go off on these people for repeating this and call em out for lying, its just obvious how disingenuous they are being by using the Ost game. Its straight BS.

I think this is temporary because.

1) Advertisers are going to be pissed that they are not getting the eyeballs on these matchups they were promised would give them x number of eyeballs. They will lower their rates they pay as people only watch a couple games in September as opposed to being glued to their screens

2) ESPN, Fox, Amazon, Paramount and so on will start bitching to conferences and schools that they though they were going to get the rights to a Texas vs Ohio State matchup but are getting Texas vs Toledo matchup instead

3) Conferences/Schools are going to say "talk to the CFP... they have made it in our best interest to play Toledo. We have tailored our OOC scheduling to make the CFP Committee more likely to put us in the playoffs"

4) ESPN and crew will put pressure on the CFP to stop generally ignoring SOS for their playoff picks so that their September advertising revenue stops taking a hit.

It was a fun trip for sure, any seat is a good seat.

These games are going away sadly so get them while you can

This narrative is so incredibly misused and it's really dangerous to assume that is the reason they got left out of the playoffs. They got left out of the playoffs because they got drilled by UGA, lost badly to Florida and played incredibly poorly on the road at Moo State and UK, two of the leagues bottom dwellers. They could have easily survived the loss to Ohio State. In fact, I would argue their ranking shows that they were definitely not punished for that loss.
That only works if you think a 10-2 Texas team that played 5 top 10 teams and beat 3 of them gets left out of the playoffs.

Do you truly think the Florida and UGA games matter enough to keep us out of the playoffs if we have that extra win? The committee has proven W/L is weighted more than strength of opponents or how close some games are, so there is that.

Consider Bama is in the playoffs in spite of losing to a team that is worse than Florida, (not debatable if head to head counts) and their other loss is to a team that Texas beat by multiple scores.

The Texas/Ohio State type games will become a thing of the past by 2027. Too much to lose and not enough to gain. The amount of $ an SEC Team stands to make by hosting a CFB Playoff game on campus far outweighs the cost of buying out a scheduled game with a blueblood opponent.

We already play a P4 in tech, so it'd be in our best interest to play tomato cans the other 2 games we have a choice for.

Actually, it would be in best interest to play the best non conference team you can get for the first game. If non conference loses will not impact conference standing, then why not try to play the best team possible?

This improves SOS, a loss is not that bad early, a win is huge.

Your forgot to mention that they beat 3 teams that are in the playoffs. A 10-2 Tezas would have gotten in had they played Rice instead of Ohio St.

I'd rather play another SEC team than some milquetoast ACC/B1G team every other year. If the others are worth a bucket of warm spit, they'll show up in the CFP.

We've opened with big OOC games in the past. The trick is to win them

You mean the 12 game season or conference. games?

I guess we could cut OOC games?

With nine SEC games (which I don't like) and the possibility of a 16-team playoff (which I also don't like), playing in a real conference is going to be brutal.

Conversely, imagine life in the B1G where you can just hold out several starters against Rutgers.

now that SEC's going to a 9-game schedule and SOS has proven to be a moot point

This was a mistake. We should’ve never went to 9 conference games. I would rather play 8 conference games and 2 p4 games every year. The SEC is too much of a buzz saw. Even if you make it through, the injuries pile up for the post season. The other side of it is, the big 10 cherry picks their schedules to where the best avoid the best, save for maybe two or three games a year.

It's a good point. But, sure makes for a lopsided calendar. Sort of like college basketball is now.

2015 you opened with La Monroe at home and played no one.
2016 you opened in Atlanta against 8-5 UNC and then played no one
2017 you opened against App state in Atlanta then played Notre Dame #11 second week, good OOC
2018 you opened with Austin Pea and played no one after
2019 opened with Vandy but then 1st OOOC was Murray state, then played no one
2020 COVID
2021 Opened with #16 Clemson (North Carolina) then played no one
2022 opened at #16 Oregon then played no one
2023 Opened UT Martin then played no one
2024 Opened #14 Clemson (Atlanta) then no one

So basically in a decade you played 4 top 15 teams, 0 were top 10 and UNC in the OOC, the rest were cupcakes.

Obviously you schedule GT which historically is a 2-1 win for UGA with UGA winning the last 8 in a row.

Point being while UGA is certainly not scared to play decent OOC, you do it less than half the years AND none of those were top 10 teams.

Not exactly the same comparison to going on the road against defending and top 2-3 team in Ohio State.

Those Clemson games were scheduled when Clemson was competing for National Titles and we schedule them a lot in general. It's not an annual game like GT but we do like to play Clemson as much as possible within reason. This 9 game conference schedule may impact that as well.
