Here's a very important question: Is she free to pursue any teaching jobs in MS, or will they assign her to a school?
This is the key. I thought these programs were tied to sending teachers to districts with teacher shortages. I’d definitely check on that. If they send her to the Delta or JPS, that will be a rough, rough five years. With the high likelihood she won’t even make it five years, and it will be back at school pursuing another major.

What do you expect from the slimy school that hired Hugh Freeze and Bruce Pearl.

Finally, PERS has moved to 35 years for retirement for new teachers.
Have they moved it again? I retired after 25 years but everybody hired after 2011 , I think, had to do 30 years. Haven’t heard it was 35 now. Even at 30, it will deter people from going into the field

I’ll be honest, I work in education and I don’t think many schools care where you got your education degree from. As long as you have your certification and your degree you are going to find a job.
There’s too big of a need for teacher’s for schools to be picky over what school they got their education degree from.
True...
I also think another thing to consider is that the ONE area that regional schools like Troy excel in is teacher prep...because that is basically the reason for their existence and continues to be the major attraction for students. This is particularly true for kids that are likely to be teaching in smaller more rural school districts.
I'd certainly want to go to Ole Miss for the social aspect and the campus environment. But from a pure academic and career prep standpoint... these regional schools would be just fine.
A good example in your state would be U Texas vs Texas State.

When my son was looking around he visited engineering schools in the southeast. All were great with their programs except Auburn. The professor never showed but they offered to take on a tour of the athletic facilities.

100% agree. I started in 2012 and left after 11 years to move to college level. Now, it's 35. The state doesn't want people in the system because it's broke.

When my daughter was looking, the AU prof she wanted to meet with was out of town on our visit date, and referred us to the department head. I thought "Well, this will be short and perfunctory". Completely the opposite. The guy spent the better part of an hour hard selling my daughter on AU. Similar experience with my son.
Unfortunately, even with the top tier President's scholarships to AU, it was still a bit cheaper to stay in state and go to either Texas or ATM, where both were also accepted. Both went Aggie engineering, no regrets.

They will most likely remove that 13th check soon too if I had to guess.

Also, they said they may have a scholarship where they will cover the cost if she will teach for 5 years in Mississippi.
ETA: Oh, and make sure you know which "under served" schools qualify for payback. Tunica is nice this time of year, if you get my drift.

The William Winter Scholarship. That's good in every Mississippi school. The catch is you have to teach in a Title I school, aka poor awful schools, like a Delta or JPS school. Not worth it.

True but this is a state thing. Any University in the state will do this.

That's great. But I highly doubt any school would be rude to a potential student..
She like Troy originally because it's closer to home? Don't blame her one bit. Much more comfortable feeling being close to home, especially that first year.

Better be for new hires !!
ETA- legislators are under similar plan
So not sure they would completely do away with. Like I say , fine for new hires but not me!
